Santa María Church

Santa Maria Church is located at the Plaza Santa Maria. This is the oldest church in Alicante city, built on the site of Alicante’s biggest mosque, and finished in the 13th century in the Gothic style. There was a fire in the 15th century, so the church was rebuilt. The church has a Baroque façade that is crowned by two asymmetrical towers, one built in the 14th century and the other in the 18th century. The main doorway has an image of the Virgin Mary by the sculptor Juan Bautista Borja. There is one non-cruciform nave with side chapels between the buttresses. The main altarpiece is Rococo, from the 18th century, and so are the chapels of the Bautismo, Comunion and Inmaculada. The chapterhouse contains an enormous baptismal font from the 16th century and a Valencian Baroque organ from 1653.
