Lagos, Portugal
You can easily spend a whole afternoon inside Lagos’ 16th-century walls, walking the cobblestone streets, admiring the tiled buildings and historic churches, and stopping in cafes and shops. But this is all an starter to the city’s main course—its dozens of stunning beaches where sandy coves are sandwiched between dramatic limestone rock formations like those of Ponta da Piedade. Meia Praia’s 2.5-mile stretch of golden sand is dotted with cafes and bars, and every water sport imaginable is happening out in the waves, from paddle boarding to paragliding. The fun continues after dark, with some of the best nightlife in Portugal’s Algarve region.

Read onWhere to find the best gelato in Lagos
If you’re like me, taking a leisurely stroll around Lagos always involves a stop for a sweet treat. And in this beachfront city that means Italian-style gelato. Locals love it, and shops here have responded with flavours, colours, and even textures that you’d never find in Italy. Here are my top six gelaterias where you can indulge your craving.
Miguel Andrade, Lisbon, Portugal
- GeIícia - Vero Gelato Italiano336Specialising in gelato, this artisanal shop serves some of the best ice cream in the Algarve. They serve it using a spatula, just like the Italians do. It’s made with only the freshest ingredients, including delicious fruits and nuts. Apart from classic flavours like strawberry and chocolate, Gelícia also serves other tasty options such as cocco (coconut) and nocciola (hazelnut). Tripadvisor readers give this a “best of the best” rating.
- Crema di Gelato346This has been a beloved spot for years, and it's not hard to see why. With a wide variety of both classic and innovative flavours—think Algarve fig or Port wine—you’re sure to find something to satisfy your sweet tooth. And don't even get me started on the cones, because you can choose between the traditional biscuit cone and a decadent chocolate cone. Trust me, you won't regret treating yourself to a scoop (or two).
- Gloosi By Artisani35I’d say that this shop is making a strong case that gelato doesn’t always have to be served in a cup or a cone. It can be rolled into a crepe, placed beside a pancake, or even piled high on a waffle. At this location on a cobblestone street, you can indulge in traditional flavours as well as some more unique ones, including my personal favourite, passion fruit sorbet.
- Ice Cream Factory529As you’re walking down the road toward the beach at Praia da Luz, you’ll come across a little shop on your right painted bright blue. There’s a selection of traditional flavours, along with a few that you’d definitely never find in Italy. (I highly recommend the Magic Unicorn flavour, which is surprisingly delicious.) There are a couple of tables out front, but most customers just take theirs down to the ocean.
- Rolly's ice cream14Thai-style ice cream rolls are taking over the local dessert scene, and it’s easy to see why. These mouth-watering treats are prepared right before your eyes on an ice-cold tray, giving you a show that's almost as good as the dessert. There are plenty of flavours of ice cream, as well as toppings that are sure to satisfy your cravings, from Oreos to Snickers to Chips Ahoy.
- Britaica108In the heart of downtown Lagos, this cafe is hard to miss because of its awning in a striking shade of yellow. It offers a wide range of gelatos from Nosolo Italia, a well-known brand in the Algarve. One of the most unique is Dom Rodrigo, a traditional Algarve sweet made with almonds, eggs, and cinnamon. There are also more traditional flavours like strawberry, chocolate, and rhom con pasos (rum raisin).
