Chalet Daheim was a perfect place to stay for an active holiday in the Berner Oberland. It was everything we wanted and more. It gave us a brief glimpse into what life is like (or increasingly WAS like) in a small alpine village. Don’t bother reading further – just stay here, you’ll love it.
The Chalet was simply and traditionally furnished. It was functional, with plenty of room and all the amenities you need including a satellite TV, DVD player, surprisingly good wi-fi, washing machine, a full kitchen and a functional wood burning stove.
The chalet has a small balcony with mesmerizing views across to Kleine Scheidegg and the Jungfrau. There was a parking space outside. The first time you park, I'd suggest dropping the passengers since the drive is fairly steep with a tight turn. You’ll need a car to stay here although it's feasible to use the Postbus. It’s not a place where you can nip out to the shops if you forget something.
The village of Isenfluh is also a surprise. It really is perched up on a steep sunny plateau half way up the mountain. The houses, probably about 20 of them, are real – not touristified - as they are in many places. The narrow “road” between chalets reminds you that you’re in a real alpine village. This place wasn’t built for cars. The traditional architecture, colourful fretwork and flower filled window boxes (and Herr Daeppen's impressive roses) create a picture perfect scene. It really is a place to go and forget about the bustle of the world. It’s very quiet and peaceful.
Getting to the village is likely to draw a few gasps though. Things start well enough on the main road to Lauterbrunnen with a well-signposted right hand turn. The road then climbs steeply along a series of hairpins. It’s often a single track with passing places and ominous drops on one side but it’s an easy, low gear, drive.
Some years ago the road was destroyed by an avalanche caused by a storm. Rather than rebuild the road they built a new tunnel to the village. It runs for around 2km inside the cliff and uses a 360 degree spiral to gain height. The inside of the tunnel is only roughly finished with a concrete spray making it appear more like a cave, The kids thought it looked like a Disney tunnel on Big Thunder Mountain. Once out of the tunnel there are more hairpins before you arrive at the village. We drove up and down this road every day and, by the end, I quite enjoyed it. It makes you realise you’re really in the mountains not like the rest of the tourists in their sterile, international, hotels and it definitely added to our sense of adventure.
In reality the village itself may be far less isolated that many in Britain. There’s a regular post bus service, a better mail delivery service than we’d expect at home and a charming hotel – The Waldrand. The views from the restaurant on a clear day were stunning. The food was traditional and very reasonably priced and the chef and owner, Urs, was enthusiastic, welcoming and funny. We enjoyed a meal of Rostii with a dessert and beers for four for 101CHF. If you're passing on the main road below it's worth the drive up.
Isenfluh is also connected to Suwald by a small cable car. The car only takes 8 people (or a cow – and they mean it!). The bright red cabin floating above the village on a sunny morning is probably my ideal Swiss scene. It costs about 12CHF return per person and cuts out a few hours of uphill slog depositing you on the Suwald, an even higher sunny plateau of unfeasibly pretty chalet style farm buildings. There is also a charming stublii at the upper cable car station. More of that later.
There was a well-marked and pleasant walk from Suwald to the Lobhornehutte. It was a few hours uphill starting in the treeline with the vistas opening out as we got higher. There was a lake (Sulseewli) which was an ideal picnic spot and the SAC hut at the top served food and drinks with a stunning view of the Jungrau range. Order the Rugenbrau and the picture on the can will be the view you’re looking at! Prices, of course, are steep but the view is free.
On the way back down the mountain we walked to Mederalp and asked about buying cheese at a farm. It only cost about 5CHF and was well worth it for a quick tour of the cheese making and cheese store. And it tasted beautiful. Then we stopped at the stubli at Suwald and had soup, bread and sausage with apple juice. It was a great end to the day. Chalet Daheim was only a 3 minute walk home from the lower station. It all made for a very nice day out.
Value for money at Chelet Daheim is exceptional, Herr & Frau Daeppen are welcoming and helpful, the location adds real value and the views are stunning. If you don’t want to use it as a retreat from the busy world, it's well located for walking, touring or other activities.
This is possibly the best place I’ve ever stayed!
