“Peace and tranquility”
Reviewed 6 February 2016 for a stay in January 2016

We had a fantastic time here. After a full on year and needing time out, this definitely gave us what we were looking for. Time out, in the beautiful NZ bush, private access to what feels like your own beach because there's no one else around, leisurely walks down the beach to other gorgeous spots, heaven! We stayed two days and would of happily stayed longer (a week would be perfect!) It feed our souls.

“All the benefits of camping, with (almost) none of the hassle”

DreamCatchers offers all the benefits of camping while taking away most of the hassle, in a wonderfully serene setting.

The little colony of tents is tucked away at the end of a long dirt drive amid bush, marshland and sand flats. At first this remote part of Northland seemed rather desolate, but by my second day I had fallen in love with it. In particular, Rangiputa beach, which is a few minutes’ walk from the tents, is supremely restful – a huge expanse of patterned white sand that’s sometimes hard as rubber, sometimes so soft you sink in up to the ankles, while the water is so shallow at low tide that you’d be challenged to get your knees wet.

The hosts, who live on site in similar accommodation to their guests, are friendly and helpful, while the tents themselves (each one in its own bush clearing at the end of a long path) offer privacy, seclusion, and a fair degree of comfort. The beds may be a matter of taste – I thought it was the second most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept in (after a bed in the Hotel Mariott in Ottawa), my partner thought it was too soft but got used to it. Mosquitos and other insects weren’t an issue once we got into the habit of closing the ‘front door’ of the tent – there is plenty of light and there are netted ‘windows’ to let the air in. I loved hearing the sound of wildlife outside the tent, before it became whisper quiet as darkness fell. The ‘kitchen’ is awesome – a great place to sit outside in the hot afternoons, two gas hobs as well as a BBQ, pretty much all the utensils you need, plus salt, pepper and oil, sugar and coffee.

This is still camping, so there is no running water – the shower is rather basic, with a pumped hose (and a few beetles seeking the sun), you refill your big water container from a spring at the main reception area, and there’s a shared worm toilet, which is a lot nicer than it sounds. Power (sufficient for lighting the tent and kitchen and maybe for charging an iPhone) is solar. There’s no WiFi, and 3G seems to work better for Spark than for Vodafone.

Coopers Beach, about half an hour away, has all the food supplies you need – and a great swimming beach – while Mangonui, just a little bit further, is very charming, with unpretentious but decent eateries. About 15 minutes in the other direction there’s Matai Bay – also great for swimming – and a vineyard with a café that has great views but overpriced food and indifferent service.

The only thing I really missed was a hammock!

This whole operation has been running for less than two years, which makes it all the more impressive. Kudos to Zoe, Berny and their woofer helpers for their beautiful, smoothly run and eco-friendly ‘hotel’. I hope I can return someday to see how it’s continued to evolve!
