Poovar is lovely by itself with the estuary and the sea around. I traveled here in March 2016 as a family. With a pleasant jetty ride we reached the resort which has a beautiful garden and rooms are widely spread across. We stayed in the superior land cottage ,rooms were clean and compact. However we had problem with the Jacuzzi in our room which was later rectified.

Also they have drop service to beach from the hotel on a jetty on this remember to stick to time else they might not wait for your return which so happened with us and had to end up hiring a local jetty with great difficulty.

Buffet breakfast seemed decent and food is average.

We loved the ayurvedic massages they offered here.

To sum it up nice place to stay for a couple of days.

We stayed in floating room in December 2016.Since it was "peak" season, the room rent was INR 15000 ( incl. extra child) and our expectations were really high before we went in.
The taxi leaves you to the boat station , from where you( and your luggage) are transported through speed boats. You need to wait for boat ( or other shared guests) to arrive , sometimes annoyingly.

The room did not meet our expectation. The toilet seat cover was broken ( as soon as I sat, it fell down on the floor), there were lizards in the room. The air-con did not seem to cool efficiently and the room was super hot when we arrived. The water outside the floating room is filthy with lots of rubbish floating around.
Dinner was OK but many items in breakfast seemed stale. Reception is very slow and inefficient. They take ages for check in and check out.
Other things on the resort are just average ( rabbit village is just a pen of rabbits), 2-3 hammocks hang from the tree where you can swing yourself , you can try archery but nothing great about it.Swimming pool closes at 6 or 7 PM ( can't remember) but nothing special about swimming pool.
Basically, I felt complete rip-off for the kind of money we paid. Only saving grace is 15-20 minutes of boat ride through backwaters but there too, local people riding in other boats in same waters , howl at you , pass flying kisses to lady guests. We stayed there on 25th Dec and the reception asked us not to go to the beach as there were drunk people there and we were asked not to take risk.
Will never return nor recommend to friends.

When you get to any resort there are 3 important things to consider.
1. The place.
2. The food.
3. The service.

While PIR (Poovar Island Resort ) scores high on the ambiance and the novelty of the place and same can't be said about the other 2.

The place is well maintained in terms of the landscaping and to an extent the rooms. But food was a big let down. We had to wait for certain items in the buffet and the taste was not up to any standards. Though the regular south Indian dishes like vadas and idli were good, that is hardly an indicator of how good the other food being served is. Also we were coerced into having a buffet saying that a la carte would take an hour to make. With kids, we were held to randsom with that. (P.S. The floating restaurants would have been a better option which we sadly came to know after the trip. )

Secondly the general coordination among the staff is left much to be desired. Forget the friendly smiles, the staff seems to be at their wits end when dealing with a full hotel. Front office is fine to an extent, restaurant was sad, house keeping was so so.

The pool was a somewhat of a delight till the time you stepped in and found the tile chips at the bottom of the pool nudging your soles to float. Probably a way of telling you to swim rather than stand in the pool.

Ayurvedic massage must be booked in advance else get your spouse to do it.

But it's a lovely place for kids. Ample space, Obstacle track, trampoline, indoor games, play park.

All in all, not value for money....I hope PIR gets its act together to take the resort to another level.

Spacious rooms, equally bigger bathroom. Rooms were clean - it is not easy to manage such a large property next to sea shore... right from start our experience have been awesome. We went in 1st week of Nov 2016 with family - booked 3 rooms at the hotel. All rooms were land cottages. We were picked up by a boat from their own jetty, cruise from jetty to the hotel was 20 minutes ride - it was enchanting...welcome at the hotel was very good...food was kind of all right... break fast variety could have been better. Early evening ride to the beach was very good and also the river boating through jungle was a unique experience. We did not face any issue at hotel - our overall experience was excellent.

Great location and the perfect getaway place. The food was amazing and the we tried the Pomfret on the chef's recommendation and it was exquisite. The staff was hospitable and the resort itself is beautiful. Only you can';t go anywhere without a boat. We tried the ayurvedic massage centre as well and the therapist was good.
However keep in mind that the place is slightly old and could use some maintenance - the tiles in the pool were broken, there were ants in the room and the towels provided were very old. Also the wifi wasn't working and the staff was unable to help with it. The ayurvedic massage centre could also use some work and they could replace old furniture.
Overall experience was good, as the place itself is fantastic.
