I wanted to visit Monteverde for a few days and then on to La Fortuna. I chose the Sunset Hotel after looking at Monteverdeinfo.com web site and seeing the nice location a little out of the way, since I like peace and quiet.
The hotel is in a lovely secluded location about a mile outside of town, however the owner neglected to tell me that hot water system was broken, and for the 3 days I stayed there I basically had no water in my room to bathe or for the toilet. The hotel is on well and septic I guess and his water pump relay was somehow broken, so in order for me to have water in my room, he had to flip on a breaker. The pump would run constantly so he couldn't leave it turned on. I had to ask for 10 minutes of water in the morning, and 10 minutes at night to bathe. The other big problem is that there is no on site management, so it was not possible to get anything after 7pm when the owner left for the night. The last night I stayed there he showed up an hour late and I had to catch a bus at 7:30 with no morning shower or coffee or breakfast. He literally pulled in as I left for the bus, just to take my moneyl and he offered no discount or anything.
Each day I was there he promised the water would be fixed by afternoon and it wasn't. Also the meal served was the exact same for 3 days in a row... yecchh. Same breakfast, same dinner over and over. Basically the hotel itself is really cool, but the owner doesn't give a flip about customer service and the other people that were at the hotel with me were also very displeased with the accomodations and lack of honesty and service.
