I was looking for a remote place. And this is what I found. No big tourism, nothing fancy. It's self catering (but with fresh bread rolls hanging on the door every morning and a starter kit in the kitchenette, you can also join the dinner) but very homely. Gorgeous little cottages in an old wine yard. Lovely hosts (thanks Yvonne) and an easy and cozy place to start your everyday activities. I can definitely recommend this place.

Friendly staff, all spoke English and quite a few German. Rooms and grounds are clean and well maintained. Dinners in the garden were excellent with great wine list. Pool was small, but large enough for some laps.

When we saw pictures of Quinta das Vinhas we booked a room immediately- and it is every bit as lovely in reality! The Quinta isn't directly located anywhere near the action which was what we intended, but mentioned here in case someone else doesn't. It commands a magnificent view instead over the gardens and surrounding vineyards down to the sea. From there you can also see (and reach via path) the additional appartments.
The Quinta used to be a residence before being converted to a hotel and there are many charming details and furniture pieces that remain. There even is a small tour and introduction to the history Fridays at 5pm.
The rooms are beautiful and ours had a view over the gardens to the sea. In the house there is a living room/sitting area with the wifi zone. In addition there are various places outside in the gardens with chairs.
Breakfast is a good selection and set up in the former kitchen, but can also be taken to the tables just outside. The homemade joghurt and fresh fruit plates are especially worth mentioning. Coffee and tea can be prepared during the day.
Dinner is offered as well with the three course menu for the day listed and reservations can be made until 5pm. Special wishes such as vegetarian alternatives can be requested. Dinner was served inside at this time of year and very tasty on both occasions where we took part. The menu is seasonal and fresh products are used which you can taste. The wine list was very nice and other beverages can be ordered as well.
If you are interested in Madeira wines and the local spirits, a tasting is offered where you can sample three different varieties (7€ for the wines) which can also be bought at the reception.
The night sky is amazing with all the stars you can see after the sundown which is also (at least partially) viewable.
In summary we had a wonderful stay and felt very welcome since everybody was really nice and helpful - thank you for making our stay special and sharing this hidden gem with guests!

We stayed in this Quinta (main house) for a long weekend. The place itself, the location and the view was a very nice surprise from the moment we arrived. On one hand it is a historical and traditional Madeiran building, on other hand- very nicely and tastefully decorated. Our room had a view over the pool and the ocean. The room itself was very specious, and so was the bathroom. The breakfast takes place in a very beautiful old traditional Madeiran kitchen, around a big table together with other guests. The breakfast was very good- with fresh bread and traditional pastries, local organic marmalade, fresh fruit etc. Unfortunately the weather was not so good during our stay. However, we can imagine that you can have a great time in the swimming pool and in the area around- sunbathing and relaxing. The location is very good if you plan to do sightseeing and hiking around all the island. Also- even if it rains in other parts of the island, it is always sunny on the terrace of Quinta das Vinhas. 2 things for improvement- the wifi is available only in the shared living room (not in the hotel rooms). If you stay in one of the rooms of the main house, you have to take into account that you can hear your neighbours and other guests very well- every guest passing by, or having a talk etc. Maybe it is because of the fact that it is an old building or so, but would be nice to have a better sound isolation.
Nevertheless, we really liked our stay and we would definitely come back to this place.

Dear Guests,
thank you for your positive review, we are very happy that you liked to be at the Quinta and yes, you are right, often here in Calheta we have sunshine.
I want to answer to the points you critic. In our old house - the Mainhouse has more than 400 years - the thick walls do not allow to install WiFi in all 6 sleeping rooms and until now no company which we asked to find solutions was successful with finding solutions, but we are persistent and hope that we can find a solution soon.

You are right too, as the Quinta is a historic building the architectural conditions for the rooms are not comparable with typical hotel rooms. But we will try to find solutions here too.

Thank you once again for your constructive review.

We wish you all the best and would love to welcome you again.

Stay either in the main house or in one of the very well appointed s/c cottages in the vineyard. You can have dinner in the house if you want - good local food, simply cooked, but the service can be a little slow.

Room Tip: Cottages away from the car park and near the pool are the quietest.
