“Superb B&B in Ironbridge”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2012

A girlfriend and I recently had a reunion in Ironbridge and spent one night at Calcutts, a lovely period property full of character but with every modern convenience. We stayed in the Lord Dundonald and Alexander Brodie rooms, both of which are spacious, individually furnished and have excellent en-suite shower rooms. It is clear that a lot of care and thought has gone into the important finishing touches throughout the house. Calcutts is in a very peaceful location with a lovely outlook towards the gorge. It is 5 minutes walk from the Jackfield Tile Museum and only a short drive to all the other museums, local attractions and surrounding countryside. Sarah and James, the delightful owners, are very welcoming and helpful, and also serve a delicious breakfast. I intend to return, next time with my husband, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others. Anyone looking to experience a quintessentially English B&B should consider staying here.

We stayed here recently with my parents and couldn't fault the warm welcome we were given.
It was a charming house with an interesting history.
We stayed in the converted section beside the main house and found the room ample for our needs.
The breakfast was delicious and it was great to have such a nice fresh fruit salad as an option.
Would recommend to others.

This is without a doubt the best B & B my wife and I have ever stayed in, and I can honestly say it was completely perfect in every way.

The location was superb, quiet and scenic and just a short walk from the bridge.

The house itself was beautiful and full of character and charm, with decent views all round. It was spotlessly clean and nicely decorated throughout. We stayed in the Lord Dundonald room which was bright and airy, with great views over the gorge and an enormous 18th century 4 poster bed, which was very comfortable.

Our hosts, Sarah and James were helpful and friendly from the outset and we felt very welcome and looked after. You could tell they run the house as a labour of love as well as a business, and this was was reflected in the general feeling we had throughout our stay.

In the morning we had a full English, freshly cooked to order and absolutely delicious. There was also a selection of cereals, fruit and fresh juices.

We would also like to recommend Darcy's at the station, which is a restaurant just a short walk from Calcutts House. You can't book a table so you may have to wait a little, but they have an upstairs lounge, nibbles a good range of drinks to keep you happy in the meantime. I had the lamb cutlets, my wife had the Greek salad and homous, both were superb.

In terms of visiting the museums, I would recommend buying the passport for £22.50, which gives you year round access to all museums. We visited the tile factory which is literally about 300 yards from Calcutts House and the Victorian village, a 10 minute drive away. Both were absolutely fascinating and enjoyable and we will definitely return one day when we've managed to turn out a few little ones :)

What more could you ask for? Absolutely faultless all round and we will definitely recommend and return in the future.

Thanks so much for everything,

Jamie & Mina

Upon our Arrival at Calcutts house we were greeted by host James,( and Serrin there dog) and offered a hot cuppa.
We were offered a choice two vacant rooms we chose the one with a smaller four poster(next time we will go for the BIG bed) our room had good old floorboards nicely decorated. we asked James where we could go for dinner and he gave us a few suggestions, we settled for the bird in hand.
Breakfast is earlyish at 8 to 9 mon/fri Sarah cooked and served our ample meal plenty of tea coffee and extra toast if required. The view from the breakfast table was very impressive enhanced by the thick coating of frost on everything this morning.
We had booked for just one night 01/12/11, But both James and Sarah impressed as hosts that we stayed an extra night. Our hosts even provide a veggie breakfast for my wife once they found out her preferance. For peace and quite its going to be hard to beat even the birds seem to wake up later. We both highly recommend this house to anybody taking a break in the Ironbridge area.

Room Tip: If you fancy a lot of room in your bed try the BIG one for size its big give it a try.
