We were pleased with this hotel in which we spent one night. We had a good room with a large terrace, overlooking a view to the rear of the building. No noise from the road in front.
Our group were delighted to find a sizeable pool in a sunny location. Towels were supplied from the friendly reception. Some comfortable chairs round the pool but the wood slatted "loungers" were pretty hard.
The bed was comfortable enough but the pillows were the firmest I have encountered. We did not use the small shower but a few in our party said they were "embraced" or had a bit of a tussle with the shower curtain that wrapped around them! A curious arrangement instead of a simple straight curtain.

A fair breakfast with freshly cooked fried eggs and the best bacon to date. Very good croissants, home made apple cake and other specialities . Rice puddings with cinnamon and yoghurt. Nice cafetière coffee. Orange juice was not fresh although there are masses of orange trees in the area.

The price was very reasonable and it was very good value for money. Clean and in good condition. And good crisp sheets !

An easy walk from the village which is a delight . So a very good place for a stopover !

Good:breakfast, clean & location
Bad: Cold rooms, they switch off heat at night, hard bed, burned covers, extra cover was moldy, light bulbs broken, not what it looked in photo.
Bathroom smelled food from the kitchen from the ventilation.

Too expensive for what it offers.

Dear Mrs. Thomai,
I'm glad that you liked some of the most important aspects of your stay with us like location, cleanliness and breakfast but I'm very sorry that some other issues made your overall experience apparently a very negative one. I will try to address these issues here: during the winter time we offer central heating to the rooms but when the weather is not very cold, as when you visited us in March, we usually turn it off after midnight and we suggest to our clients to use the air condition instead during the night. We think that the combination of central heating with air condition keeps the room quite warm but after reading your review, we may reconsider. But all in all, we very rarely receive complaints about heating. Then you mention that the covers were burnt or moldy and the light bulbs burnt, too. As the review was published several days after your stay, we could not check that all these things happened indeed, but anyway I don't have any reasons to doubt about what you report. The only thing I can do is apologize for these problems and assure you that we will double check our linens and covers and draw the attention of our cleaning ladies accordingly. Regarding the hard beds, after many years in this business, I tend to think that the desired mattress hardness is a matter of personal taste. I hope to have the chance to accommodating you again in the future, be it during winter or summer, so as to have the chance to change your mind.
Yours sincerely,
Vasilis Goudis

A large but beautiful rock built building (typical of the area).
Our room was spacious, with a balcony with a view.
Breakfast was also good - we were very satisfied by this place.
The town or Areopolis has great night life also.

The attractive Kastro Maini Hotel is constructed of stone with castle-like towers in the style for which the Mani is famous.
Family run, the hotel is situated about 10 minutes walk from the centre of Aeropoli, a typically Greek town, where there is a choice of tavernas.
The hotel boasts a lovely swimming pool which in June we have often had to ourselves. Free wi-fi is available around the pool and in the public areas.
The owners have limited English but make up for it with the warmth of their smiles.
Breakfasts are good with more variety than is found in most Greek hotels of this class.
The hotel is ideally situated for exploring the Mani. The Diros Caves are a short drive away. These are worth seeing but you will be lucky if you get a boatman who speaks English. Gythio, once the port of ancient Sparta is within easy driving distance. From here you can catch a ferry to Kythira or Crete.
In short, the hotel is recommended as an excellent base for exploring this unspoilt area of the Peloponnese. Ideally you want a room at the back of the hotel.

I stayed in this hotel in April. The hotel is very conveniently located near the center of Areopoli, which is like a "Capital" to Mani. I was amazed by the warm welcome and the family atmosphere. The rooms were clean and well-apointed, while we were blown by the breakfast with organic products and home-made sweets by Mrs. Valentina. The hotel is very cozy and a hot chocolate by the fireplace is a must. Kastro Maini was the best option as a base to explore the area of Mani. If you are looking to travel on a budget, this hotel is an excellent choice.

Room Tip: choose a back facing room. On a clear day, you will have a nice sea view!
