My friends and I were finishing up two great weeks in Paris, Normandy, Barcelona and decided to end our vacation in this lovely rural area in the south of France. We booked our stay in advance and were looking forward to a more relaxed form of sightseeing. Val and Mike were excellent in steering us in the right direction to maximize the time we had in the region. We went on a very pleasant afternoon ride on the Canal du Midi, had lunch at a wonderful country restaurant, went to see boat jousting in Sette and an absolute must - a wine tour with Wendy. We enjoyed delicious croissants with fellow travelers Dave and Maria from Spain each morning and a delicious barbeque dinner prepared by Mike or a gorgeous salad and cheese plate by Val. The rooms were immaculate, the food delicious, the company great fun and our hosts knowledgeable and very pleasant. Our stay here revived us after two weeks of running around and prepared us for our trip back to the States via Barcelona. It was a much anticipated journey and everything was perfect!! A late afternoon dip in the pool - followed by an aperitif - then your evening meal -
Tres Bien!!

Room Tip: I stayed on the top floor in a very spacious bedroom with armchairs and a coffee table. Also the ba...

We were travelling up the Med coast and had a 1 night stopover in this very friendly and convenient location (we understand that 1 night is unusual). We were made very welcome by Mike who provided a much needed cup of tea after our journey, as well as some excellent home-made victoria sponge. We then sat chatting to him by the pool and he gave us lots of useful information not only about the immediate area but where we were going on to. Our room on the top floor was very well-proportioned with modern pale furnishings and a well-appointed bathroom. As dinner wasn't available that night, Mike recommended a restaurant by the Canal in Homps which was also excellent. We enjoyed the breakfast of freshly cooked breads and fruit compote. We would highly recommend staying here in a similar situation and hope to do so again ourselves some time.l

Room Tip: our room on the top floor had fairly recently been decorated and furnished, so was very comfortable...

Val and Mike were excellent hosts and made us all feel very welcome. They have achieved the difficult balance of being there when you want them, but not being there when you want privacy. Their cooking is superb and i'd definitely recommend trying some evening meals in house. They can supply beer / wine and soft drinks at very reasonable prices if required.

The rooms were spacious, the en-suites fab and the bed linen first class.

The hotel itself can't be faulted - they even have british tv channels so we could watch the commonwealth games.

The village itself is a little quiet and i would say a car is a necessity for getting out and about to the area's attractions.

I'm sure we'll go back and next time we'll ask mike and val to organise some vineyard tours so we can take full advantage of all the lovely wine tastings around the area.

Room Tip: All the rooms were great, but the two attic rooms were outstanding.

This was a return visit to Le Vieux Relais having had a 2 night stay in 2012. If anything we found that Val and Mike have improved their delightful Chambre d'hôte or perhaps we had forgotten just how lovely it is, combining the peace and tranquility of the Lanquedoc villages with the spacious rooms ( we had one on the top floor called Narbonne) and the delightfull courtyard garden were we were served aperitif in the evening before being treated to one of Mike's fabulous barbecues.
We spent 3 days enjoying all that they offered and are hoping to return next year with our family and take the whole house for a week. Well done and thank you

Room Tip: The 2 at the top of the hotel are fab very quite and airy

Our all female group received a warm welcome to the hotel, we were collected from the airport and didnt have to wait. The rooms very very spacious and clean on arrival. The pool was enough to just dip in to cool off. There were loungers around the pool but not enough for our party, but no one seemed to mind we just used what was available. The village was pretty and very remote. We were catered for food and wine. They offered to taxi us here an there to get out and about. The other friends that helped were also very nice. This all however came at a price. I think that keys should have been provided to lock our doors or at least a safety deposit box in each room. There was no variation to breakfast. no clean towels provided over the 3 nights and the bathrooms were not cleaned. The floors were dirty in the rooms also. I was disappointed to see that there was no tea and coffee in the room either. I had pre advised Val via email my dietry requirements well in advance. Which is never usally a big deal where ever I go it seemed to be a major big deal here. I am grateful to wholemeal bread that they were able to get for me for breakfast. Most of the ladies would have also loved to have a choice of this too and did ask but felt like they were being told off for asking for some. For the dinners, lunch, deserts. If anything contained Milk (which I can not have) then i was missed out. An alternative was not prepared. For desert the group was given homemade cake, i was given a piece of fruit in a bowl and told sorry as Val walked off. Its not too difficult to prepare a sweet that does not contain milk. I have never felt such an outcast by someone for a dietry requirment. Due to my catering experience as my mum has her own catering business, the person who is not eating as per the majority is not singled out or had the finger pointed at for having a dietry choice or necessity. But this seemed to be Vals main talking point for the entire stay. I actually dreaded meal times after the first day. An alternative should have been made available as they were gvien plenty of notice.

We are pleased to hear that this guest enjoyed the peace and quiet of our location, however we feel the need to add some detail to put her review into its proper context and go some way to explaining her apparent dissatisfaction with her stay and her misunderstanding of exactly what was booked.

Firstly we are not a hotel, we are a family run chambres d'hotes and we also offers catered house lets during the summer season. We hosted a party of 11 ladies who organise a weekend away each year on a house let basis, this was their first foray abroad as a group. As they were all friends and there was no-one else in the house we did not see the need for room keys, although they were hanging in their usual place in the entrance hall, room safes and tea and coffee making facitilies in rooms are unheard of in rental houses in France. We made coffee on demand for this lady.

We clean and tidy more than most people who let houses, however guests would need to pay much more than we charge to find a location that offers changes of linen etc. during a 3 night stay, our added extra is the catering. The floor in this room was thoroughly cleaned, as are all our rooms, before the guests arrived. A feature of this particular room is the 200 year old painted clay tile floor which obviously shows the patina of age rather than dirt, however if a room is used as a central meeting point on a regular basis then obviously it is going to show the passage of a myriad of dirty feet. Regrettably an expensive bed cover from that room had to be thrown away as it was irrecoverably stained.

Turning to her dissatisfaction with the food on offer, the menu was carefully crafted around the long list of things she apparently could not eat as well one or two requirements of the other guests. The reason we could not offer wholemeal bread to other guests was that we had imported some especially from the UK for her and we would have run out if we had given it to other guests. Ironically we did not want to say this a breakfast time as it could have been misinterpreted as singling her out! You cannot buy stoneground wholemeal bread in our part of rural France. Our breakfast offers plenty of choice and we vary the choice of fresh fruit and pastries every day, we also offer more than a lot of similar establishments in France. We offered sorbet and/or fruit in place of cake at mealtimes and on one evening we made a special non-dairy dessert for everyone.

Despite knowing our location the ladies chose not to hire cars and, it being Bastille weekend, taxis were in short supply so transport was arranged to and from the airport on the understanding that drivers costs would be covered, the lady organising the group was very grateful for that. The group were badly let down by a leisure activities company who were supposed to organise taxis for them to get them to some canal boats and back and again our friends stepped into the breach at very short notice which was much appreciated by the organiser.

Our website gives an extremely accurate view of the size of our pool and we offer a mix of sun longers and lounging chairs for guests, we are not a resort hotel and most of our guests mix sightseeing and relaxing around the pool, they do not expect to lie around the pool all day every day during their visit.

The organiser and many of the other ladies could not praise our efforts highly enough and thoroughly enjoyed their stay and we look forward to seeing at least one of them again with her family next summer. We look after our guests in our home as we would our own family, but it seems that our eforts to take care of one guest were misinterpreted and we were not perceived to have done enough on this occasion.
