We spent a week at Bay Garden Hotel in Feb/08. Great little hotel; attentive staff, great breakfast buffet, lovely pools (which we had all to ourselves). Our room was clean but in need of a little facelift (no matter; we only slept/showered there). What a wonderful island - easy to explore, felt very safe. Many shops carried decent wares; we were delighted to bring home many lovely things. We got rain everyday (liquid sunshine) but only kept the place fresh and lovely. There is so much to do; it's not necessarily a laze-on-the-beach-every-day kind of place although we did manage to do that too. The restaurants we visited served excellent fare (although some were pricey - as much as $140 for 2 persons). Get a front row seat on Friday or Saturday night in Rodney Bay and watch the local kids impress one another - some things are universal! Friday night JumpUp in Gros Islet was fun and also felt very safe for the tourists.
So, in essence, if you crave a slightly different vacation enjoying a variety of activities in a safe place with an interesting history and engaging people, then this is the place for you.

We were there from the 1st - 12th March 2008. The Bay Gardens Hotel was our first experience of St Lucia and we were impressed both by the hotels facilities and friendly staff. Always clean and tidy though becoming a bit worn at the edges and could do with a refurbishment in the near future.
Down side was the tables at the main pool had no sun umbrellas and breakfast could be a hit or miss if you expected to food to be hot.
The whole area around the hotel is built up with restaurants, malls & other hotels and the beach is a short walk or courtesy bus ride.
Taxis are cheap, Castries 50ECD and Pigeon Island 25ECD and the local minibuses even cheaper if you are brave enough.
Rodney Bay is a good 1hr 15 minutes from the airport by taxi or minibus which is the one downside of going to St Lucia after a long international flight.

We returned from a one week stay at the Bay Gardens Hotel on March 10, 2008. We found this hotel to be exceptionally good value with great rates (based on our total package cost, including airfare), a secure and lovely environment, friendly staff, and a spacious and comfortable room that included a fridge, coffee maker, plates and utensils, and sink.
The hotel is just off the highway and close to convenient shopping and the many restaurants and activities of Gros Islet.
Overall, we were quite happy with our stay. I should add that some people who arrived at the same time had rooms with a few problems, but it appears that the hotel quickly tried to rectify these, in some cases by allowing a change of rooms. As well, there is a lot of construction in the vicinity and construction noise begins around 8 a.m., but this wasn't intrusive at our room location.
The buffet breakfasts included with our package were extensive, including fresh fruit, several choices of hot dishes, pastries, and freshly prepared omelets. The "Alba package" of 3 meals for $65 U.S. is good value if it's available to you, offering an evening a la carte including multiple courses from an extensive menu, a Caribbean buffet night with at least 4 choices for each of 3 courses, and a barbecue night with the same kind of selection.
The hotel adds a 10% surcharge and 8% tax on all bills. We discovered after we returned and looked at our bill more closely that this was added to the bar bill at the time of the charge, and then the hotel added this charge again for having charged the bar bill to our room. Since we bought most of our beverages off site, this didn't cost us much, but on an extensive bar charge this could add up.
We are grandparents and enjoyed the quiet, laid-back environment, but those seeking many activities on site might be less pleased. There were few children and no teenagers at the hotel during our stay.
The pools, though not large, were never crowded, and the hotel runs a shuttle hourly to their other property on the beach where we were treated as guests and given equal access to beach chairs, etc. (though on a few occasions there were brief waits for beach chairs).
Overall, we were pleased with our stay and would return under the same circumstances.

Very good restful experience for our 10-day stay. The only dark cloud - Alma the bar cashier's demeanor made us uncomfortable from day 1, especially when we sampled the free rum punch but did not stay for the b-b-q. We avoided the bar and restaurant most days due to this so she cost this otherwise excellent hotel a lot. Kudos to David the entertainment manager.
