Castle kissed by the sea is another name for Castello die Santa Severa. A beautiful place to visit with old ancient stories. There are signs in Italian but also in English which is making it great to understand what happened. A nice tour as well as a visit to the tower is recommended.
After paying a visit to the castle enjoy the rest of your day at the beach near by.

If you are driving on Strada Statale (SS) 1 Via Aurelia, make a stop here. Close by has been etruscan harbour some thousands years ago. There is also small naval history museum.
Next to the castle there is nice and popular beach.

This is a very impressive complex. However, I would delay any visit if the castle itself is not open for any reason. There is an unbelievable amount of info to absorb, however, it is only in Italian. Two cafe's at the site.

Santa Severa Castelo provides a magnificent backdrop to the beautiful beaches that are on two sides of the castle. The water is crystal clear and very safe for swimming.

When the beach is crowded, taking the driveway entry to the castle and parking there is much easier. We arrived before 8.00am and there was no charge. Usually it is five Euro. This end of the beach is also free from the shoulder to shoulder umbrellas :)

The café near the entrance to the castle is cheap and provides a great venue for a lovely glass of wine and a light lunch.

The castle itself is pretty spectacular. Pink in colour, it rises majestically on the shores of the ocean providing a very romantic backdrop for photos.

The medieval castle is a nice addition to what is one of the nicer beaches that are easily accessible from Rome. Take the train from the Roma Termini to Santa Severa for 4 euros and have a nice relaxing day at the beach. There are some excellent little restaurants to grab a bite.

Maybe it was that I went with high expectations, and don't get me wrong, the caste is beatiful and so is the view from its tower... bou the WOW factor was missing.
Tip: small kids aren't allowed up the tower, so you'll have to skip the visit -and the view- or take turns with someone!

More than the castle itself it's a combination of many things, the beach is clean and even though not huge, still big enough to accomodate lots of people, also the coffee shop sells interesting pizzas, sandwiches and a good assortment of drinks. The tour guides are very helpful, full of energy and patience, specially with children. Not very cheap to get into the castle with the guide, 15 Euros per person.

We go to the Castle quite often, mainly to hang around its outside walls because they overlook a little rocky beach where we like to lay in the sun and listen to the waves crash against the rocks in the summer time.

It is a beautiful place and Santa Marinella is a short stroll away where you can get a lovely summer day lunch.
