“Simple castle and great olive oil”

Rocca di Brisighella
Ranked #2 of 15 things to do in Brisighella
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 22 June 2013

A fun castle to explore with terrific views of Brisighella. 10-15 minute hike up to castle from the town center with 3 euro entrance fee. Best thing is the light and sweet Brisighella extra virgin olive oil - some of the best in Italy. Some buildings have unique, very old second floor porticos (see picture). A good day trip is 1/2 day in Ravenna, to see the mosaics, followed by a few hours in Brisighella.

The food was everything we hoped for and priced just right but the walls of the grotto were echoey and we found it hard to chat.

The castle of Brisighella is considerable both in itself and because of its inclusion in the context of the surrounding area.
The castle dominates Brisighella, and can be reached by a scenic footpath that starts in the center of this small town. The entrance to the castle requires a ticket (not expensive, I don't remember the exact fare) and allows the visit of the beautiful interiors, as well a wide panorama.
In my opinion the best way to appreciate the castle is to include it in a ring of trekking which from Brisighella and from the castle climbs over, for an easy and well marked path, to the Visitor Center "Ca Carné" in the middle of an interesting area of karst rocks (you can visit a small natural history museum). From there you can walk around, then through a paved road (with little traffic) down to the village of Fognano, where you can take a train back to Brisighella (check the timetables before).
This ring can easily be organized traveling in a day by train also from Florence and Bologna (we did).
