Abraham's spice garden is the place to visit if you actually want to see a spice garden filled with varieties of spices, fruits, flowers and vegetables. Sadly none of the big hotels really know about this spice garden and the genuine Mr. Abraham who has been filmed by Monty Don and features in his book on 80 Gardens around the world. This garden is situated on the way to Kottayam from Kumily. Mr. Abraham has a nice 2 acres land here and also stays here. In his garden you will find a variety of flowers that atleast I hadn't seen earlier. He has different kinds of vegetables ranging from red brinjals to purple chillies. He has almost 21 varieties of bananas and lots of spices from cocoa , cardamom, cinnamon to name a few. He personally takes you on the garden tour and explains everything with a lot of passion. His knowledge on the plants really fascinates you. He maintains the garden himself and keeps it so clean that inspite of being the rainy season we didnt find any mosquitoes hovering around our heads or feet. Really cant praise him enough. He speaks English fluently and a very simple man. His garden is a MUST VISIT while in Thekkady.

We just turned up and were welcomed by Mr Abraham himself and also met his beautiful grand daughter. He spent an hour showing us the spices and explaining the uses for each. Its a very personal and one to one tour, fantastic. We bought some spices from him to bring back to UK and they were very reasonable in price and very fresh in taste.

Another large group arrived and Mr Abraham told us to just walk around as long as we wanted and then came over to shake hands and say goodbye when we eventually left. A real gentleman and he deserves his 'fame'. He proudly showed us where Monty Don sat during the filming of the garden by the BBC.

This is a place not to be missed and beats the large commercial gardens hands down.

We must say that we first got conned and visited a " Commercial Spice Garden" that was more like a marketing gimmik to sell their herbal powders, oils and spices, which you as a tourist, end up buying at much higer rates..

Finally much later during our stay, when we finally found Abrahams Spice Garden, we were so so happy to see such genuineness and such eagerness to explain the plants and to see such love for the plants. There is a huge variety and their love for their plants rubs on to the visitor as well.. I would request that " Thekkady" be also added in the address on tripadvisor as it would help more visitors coming across this wonderfull place..

Abraham is quite a celebrity. He was filmed by Monty Don and features in his book, 'Around the world in 80 gardens'. If you can get the man himself to take you round his garden, you won't be disappointed. I heard about it through Lonely Planet and was so pleased i went there instead of the large, commercial one on my tour. Abraham has planted every tree and bush himself and sells organic spices from his garden so you can go home with something authentic. It was like a little piece of heaven.
