Although we were dropped off at a location about 45 minutes stroll away, we could see this cross and knew this was where we needed to head.
It was a lovely walk and a great achievement to end up here where so many other tourists gather.
There is something magical about this place, even though the condors don't always hang out to please the tourists.
You can get food and refreshments here and many buses also park here.
Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Good parking.

This is where most people end up when visiting Colca Canyon, hence can be busy and touristy. The view from Condor's Cross is fantastic, however there are also a lot more less crowded lookouts and vantage points along the way.

On the day we went, there were words of travellers waiting for the condors to arrive. They didn't. We were lucky enough to have a well informed and connected guide, who made a few calls and found us another location where we managed to see 6 condors perching (and then taking off and flying) from approximately 20 metres away. Wow!!!

Tip 1: Take a short walk down one of the paths to get away from the clouds.

Tip 2: If you haven't acclimatised, make sure you take things easy. You can run short of breath very quickly.

This canon the very tip of which we visited to see condors, is deeper at its far end than the Grand Canyon but reaching this bit is a long and arduous hike. The more touristy bit we visited is as you would expect, steep, rocky with a river tinkling away in the bottom of the valley. It is empty, remote and spectacular with mountain peaks in the background. When we were there it was quite busy as it is a popular spot for condor viewing and the tour buses congregate there. That’s said it was all quite manageable. We were very lucky and saw condor by the bucket load. High, swooping low, three young perching on a branch sticking out over the canyon. Periodically one would glide by over the crowds, for all the world looking like a deliberate fly-by arranged by the tourist ministry. But we spoke with others who had been there the day before and saw only one condor in the distance. We were lucky, that’s wildlife for you. While worth the time and money to go there.

The hint is in the name and though people go there and don't get any sightings we were fortunate and managed to see a couple of the giant birds in their natural habitat.

Believe me it beats watching paint dry or waiting for pandas to breath in Chengdu!
