“Marvelous monument in a Pity state”
Reviewed 30 December 2011

From far the mammoth size of the gate (entrance to the fatehpur palace mammoth size) startles you and attracts you towards it. But as you get closer you see the real shameful & filthy condition this monument is in. There are hawkers & food vendors sitting all around the structure, locals and some of the tourist just junking the leftovers on to the floor and this place is filled with beggar’s they come in a flock and surround you. I was very surprised not to see any police personals or authorities to regulate things. also to my surprise this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site….

Nice architecture. This is the highest gateway in the world. Symbol of Akbar's win over Gujarat.

“Symbol of Mughal enormity: beautiful but not maintained at all”
Reviewed 4 April 2011

The first planned city of Mughals now seems to be somewhat unplanned and messy today. When we came out of bus (direct local buses from Idgah bus-stand, Agra to Fatehpur ply frequently, fare INR 27.00, time apprx 1 hr), we all were agape when we raised our heads. It was huge really very huge. After a short walk from bus-stand ar Fatehpur, you will get there at Buland Darwaza. You need to remove your shoes at the entrance when getting inside of the Darwaza. There are many vendors selling jewelery, souvenirs etc, you need to bargain a lot. If you are good at it, you can get things in half prices :) Inside you will find a white marble encased tomb of Sufi saint Salim Chishti. If you are going inside the tomb, cover your head with a scarf, handkerchief, stole or you can get a cap inside.

The whole place would take 1 to 2 hr to cover depending upon your interest. I would recommend to hire the authorized guide only as there are several local boys who would hound you as guides. Though this is a world heritage site, this place is filthy spl the market area.
