We spent a week in March with children and grandchildren (9 adults and 7 children) and found the Grand Paradise to be ideal. Each family had a cabana facing the ocean and I would highly recommend these. They are large, with a good-sized, private outdoor patio. The grounds are very pleasant with manicured lawns and gardens and many palm trees. The beach is perfect for swimming. Very few waves and shallow out to a hundred yards with a sandy bottom. Buildings are low-rise and in our location it was very quiet. The whole experience was very laid-back. The staff were very good. The buffet area was excellent but the food was average.
We had an illness in our group. There is an on-site doctor but we found it helpful to have a translator with us. We needed to go to the Samana hospital which was a $65 USD trip and the clinic only took cash for payment.
Highly recommend the resort for a quiet, safe, family get-away.

Room Tip: Get a Select club, ocean-view cabana.

We spent one week in this resort and I hope one day we come back.

There were some small issues like:
We had room 2114 - when we arrived our WC was leaking I reported like 5 times and their unswer was just - sorry we do not have a spare broken item. After 4 days of flowing water in toilet bowl, water start to flooding our bathroom floor and finally our toilet was fixed.

In same time our fridge stop working. Honestly speaking after WC issue I just left unreported and hope our cleaner Magdalena will notice becuase each day she refill fridge with new soda drinks. Untill our departure fridge was not fixed.

These were our only issues with hotel.

Additional info:
- there is no hairdryer in the room
- WiFi is free just for one hour. You can buy WiFi for 38 USD for one week
- safe 15 USD for one week
- minibar (soda and water included - we had all inclusive program; not sure if they do other program also)

During our stay we did not try any a la carte restaurant. Food in main restaurant was excellent and staff friendly.

But the best thing is beautiful beach with white sand and with calm water!

I can recommend this hotel for someone who is looking for quiet holiday in Paradise :)

This resort is very quiet and ideal to relax. Everything was kept clean and the food was really good. We went to the Italian à la carte restaurant one night, there were barely anyone there. The beach is beautiful and water is warm (some spots have lots of weeds). We loved our room and especially our big glass shower. There is not a lot of shade at the beach and at the main pool but there is shade at the other pool near building 5. This resort is perfect for families with young kids or couple who are looking to unwind.

The room was clean, very basic, but nice. The beds were OK comfort wise, and the airconditioning worked well, as did the hot water in our shower. (we had room 1132) though I overheard another family say they didn't have hot water/water pressure in their room. As I travelled as a solo, with a child, we only qualified for the "deluxe garden view" rooms. There was no hairdryer, coffee maker, Kleenex, no face cloth. The lock for the safe was an extra $15 US. Take only US$, everything is quoted in US funds. Wifi would have been pricey, so we went without. The fridge was stocked daily with water and pop. The buffet restaurant was excellent. Good selection and well prepared food. Benito at the pool bar was super, the only staff member who went out of his way to make us feel welcome aside from the hostesses at the main buffet. Most resort guests were French speaking, or German. Take after sun lotion - the sun is very strong! The beach is very nice, shallow water a fair ways out, but very weedy in parts. You will want to bring an umbrella for shade as there is very little to be found...the palm trees by the beach provide some, but you'll need to shift your chair every few minutes to stay in the shade. Take floaty toys, cards or small board games to play as there is not a lot going on. I saw a bit of activity from time to time from a distance - water aerobics, bocce ball, volleyball..but nowhere that I found was there a schedule posted to know when these activities were going to happen, so we didn't end up taking part in any and we were never approached by the animation staff. The pool is large and has lots of chairs, as did the beach. Guard your towels, as they'll charge you $15 US if one is lost and other travellers we met had theirs taken while they were in the pool. We had a relaxing time. We did the horseback riding to waterfall half day excursion - it was fun, but stopped at a cigar making place (which wasn't listed on the itinerary) and took up time we would have preferred to spend by the waterfall. If you get a good deal, this resort is OK...but don't expect major luxury. Overall we had a good time, but be prepared to make your own fun.

So, I do not think it will really contribute to the discussion if I simply reiterate all that has already been said about this resort. I can vouch that most of what has already been described in the comments below is true. This place has tremendous potential - its location is unique as it is on a sheltered bay with warm water and a very nice, natural beach. Several of the buildings have already been renovated; one assumes more will be done over time. There are plenty of traveller descriptions that allow you to be able to pinpoint what kind of room you would prefer and to book appropriately.

I will say though, that the villas are wonderful for families or for couples who prefer some privacy and quiet. Most of the refurbished buildings are near the main restaurant and pool areas and can be quite busy and noisy. Also, the villas are closer to the beach and many have beach views. Having said that, while I personally thought the villas were quaint and very clean, they were in desperate need of freshening. For example, our sofa bed had a curve in it that could only be described as parabolic. My lampshade had a small hole in it and the prints on the wall were rippled and stained with damp. The bathroom was quite dingy as well. HOWEVER, it was spacious, comfortable, had a loft area that the kids LOVED and a really nice verandah that we could chill out on. There was also a mini-kitchenette with coffee maker, stocked fridge and a kettle.

Others have stated that the Select Club option was unnecessary - our personal view was that the food, the drink and the service at the Select Club restaurant and bar made the stay worth the money. The Select Club team was fabulous - the resort obviously selected and trained fantastic staff at this locale. The fresh espresso and baked goods in the morning and the sandwiches, fresh fruit and wraps in the afternoon were, for us, a little bit of luxury. Also, the Select Club means that you have some really nice drinks at their quite tastefully decorated and beautifully situated Cooee Bar. The food at the main buffet, while plentiful, can sometimes be rather greasy and uninspired during the day and it was really a nice touch to be able to sit al fresco and enjoy individually prepared plates of lighter fare.

As far as the rest of the resort - dinners at the main buffet were actually quite good.

The Japanese teppanyaki - it was a little bit of performance theatre that some may find it a little chintzy; food a little salty but it made a good break from the buffet dinners in that it was a formal setting and it was nice to have attentive tableside service.

The seafood restaurant - surprisingly good entrees and desserts although the portions were small and the setting was not great (in a open air dining hall similar to a university cafeteria). We saw a lot of our fellow diners in the buffet restaurant afterwards, having extras to fill up.

The bar/cafes at the rest of the resort get very busy in the evenings. For us, a little too smoky, especially with kids in tow. The entertainment was not great - a lot of Barry Manilow and there was a "chill version" of "Thriller" that would be played repeatedly that caused a bit of teeth-grinding. But, again, Select Club meant that we were able to choose to sit near the beach and enjoy our drinks and conversation in relative peace.

We had no issues with water pressure or with hot water availability. Select Club also meant unlimited Wi-Fi which was excellent at all times. Power went out briefly late at night but other than an alarm clock which consistently read the wrong time, it caused absolutely no issues whatsoever.

If there are little disappointments, I would say it would be that the DETAILS are not there. For example, with such a pleasant beach vista, why the management would not install umbrellas is beyond me. The Select Club experience could be improved by offering Select Club upgraded rooms and amenities (for example, international newspapers, in-room menu, etc.). Also, there are no non-smoking areas designated in food service areas. The kayaks for rent were not properly maintained (ours filled up with water and caused some really tense moments while out at sea) and safety vests were not properly fitted. In addition, service at the buffet restaurant can be spotty. Landscape lighting was also sparse, especially between the villas area and the main pool. While some paths have been rebuilt, others remain old and bumpy. I would say, not great for people in wheelchairs or with limited vision.

So, instead of sitting there getting annoyed that no-one is refilling your wine or that your coffee mug is empty, just walk over to the beverage station and help yourself. Some standard food items were absent. People have complained about the whole bacon thing but I, personally, was really looking forward to fresh orange juice. LOL. but even at the Select Club, the only orange drink served was a Tang type of cordial drink. So, I made do with other juices. The entire time we were at the GPS, the assortment of fresh tropical fruits remained pretty much static - pineapple, bananas, melon and guava. No mango (even though it was mango season), breadfruit, watermelon or anything else. The DR has lovely cocoa and chocolate but no chocolate desserts at any time. The wine served throughout the resort is unfortunately pretty terrible. The Select Club offers bottled European wine. I was served some white at the Select Club that had obviously oxidised but they were really good about apologising and bringing me an unopened bottle to the table straight away. It was still pretty bad wine but oh well. As far as the little things - you can let them annoy you or you can overlook them. If you go, go knowing that, for this price, you should not expect a 5* resort or service, or food. We still had a great time and came home relaxed and happy.

Room Tip: Travellers with older kids will probably really appreciate the separate sleeping area in the loft.
