Great location

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 25 Dec 2013via mobile
We visited this place during Christmas 2013, the single biggest plus point of this place is the location. It is located just opposite the sand dunes. You can walk across the road and be at the sand dunes.
The accommodation is Swiss tents which ate sufficient in terms of comfort. We visited it during winter so it was little too cold but they provided sufficient woollens.
They organize a folk dance and music in the night along with a bonfire which it's great.
There are couple of down sides to the place. The bathrooms are not very usable particularly because of the fact that the hot water is only in showers. The second big down side is the food, it is extremely spicy and not for everybody's taste.
It is good for one night stay, no point in more than that.

Once you realize it is a desert camp the experience will fall into perspective. It is meant to give you a vignettee of a typical desert life. Hence the facilities available are minimal.
We enjoyed the experience thoroughly. The sand dunes are bang opposite the camp and hence my daughters could enjoy playing on the dunes and camel safari in the morning too. The food was authentic Rajasthani. We reached late at 10 pm and they had kept food for us which was very touching. The night cultural show was okish but being live and interactive kept us all engaged.

Have been to this part of Rajasthan for the first time, ie. beyond Jodhpur, my selection of Royal Desert Camp at Sam Dunes was the right decision as the tents were very clean & cozy, all the staff were very warm & cordial, the food was also to the mark, had a real gala time in the evening with the folk dancing and the music. The date of stay also coincided with full moon as such the sand dunes were at its peak!
Would love to visit once again along with my children and their family.

Room tip: Its worth the price!

Stayed at Royal Desert Camp at Sam sand dunes. Its right opposite to the sand dunes, so very good location wise. Tent was clean. Food was decent but spicy. Camel safari was excellent. They arranged some programme in the evening. Morning breakfast was decent. Overall very nice experience.

        Royal Desert Camps -

Location - Awesome location, just opposite to Sam Sand Dunes, actually its located at place from where sand dunes start, sand dunes are walkable distance .
Service - Service is good, the tents are properly maintain with clean toliets and lights and fans are in working conditions.Staff is good and really helpful and knowledgeable.
Food - Food is really great and can say delicious. Rajashthani dishes are must to have it.

Event - In evening you can really enjoy a short camel ride till sunset point and back in tent for a Rajashthani cultural programme. The programme is really nice and yes you can enjoy a lot as you can even get a chance to dance on the cultural themes.

But yes in the end they play the DJ music and most of the Bollywood songs are played which i felt makes a spoil sport for the great evening.
The other thing which we don't like about this place was in evening you can hear noise of generators which are used for electricity purpose and yes its really irritating when going to bed.
Please check for mosquito replents if available.

I feel one should go in a group at this place and its good place for a 1 night stay. Please opt for a short camel ride only. There will be people around who will recommend you for Thar desert jeep safari or a local village ride but please avoid on it.

Room tip: Tents away from the gate are quiter.

This is very good camp just opposite to Sam dunes. It covers big area 3+ acres and spacious. Tents are kept clean and have basic amenities. They have well constructed kitchen and restaurant. Unlike other camps this camp has permanent location round the year while other go on changing their location according to govt. leasing of sand dunes areas every year. Staff is good and supportive. Most of camps in Sam Dunes have become third rate - inviting male adult groups for enjoying dance and liquor over night. This is not like that one. They have maintained their status. They arrange evening cultural program and camel safari. Actually you are so close to sand dunes, even you can go walking inside sand region. Best part of this camp is, you can wake up early morning 5AM and straight go into desert by walking!. Location has its value. They maintain family environment. You can safely stay at this camp with you family enjoying Sam dunes conviniently. It is one of best camps at Sam (many camps are just outside Jaisalmer city and quite away >20km from actual sand dunes). Stay here to enjoy- actually satying in desert atmosphere.

Room tip: most of camps are same. choose one end corner which is farthest from outside camps.
