There are new people in and the wife is behind the bar and her partner is the Chef. The food is delicious and very reasonably priced. They have not long moved in just taking over 2nd March and so far so good. The beer range is good (that is what my husband said), they are very friendly look forward to going back.

In recent times The Sportsman has had a chequered history and has been closed and re-opened on at least two occasions. The latest publicans re-opened the pub in March and they have spruced-up the public house with some new paint, fixtures and fittings. The main asset of The Sportsman is the magnificent elevated view across a flood plain, including Pulborough Brooks, towards the surrounding South Downs.

There was a friendly welcome from the publican's wife and a cheery young lady served meals and drinks, if not ordering from the bar. The real ales on offer were, surprisingly, St Austell Brewery's Tribute and Proper Job beers from Cornwall, a local brewery and a brew from Harveys of Lewes. The beer was in good condition and a full pint was delivered. There was a bit of an air lock problem on my Proper Job, which made me wonder whether it had been pulled through at the start of the session (early lunch) but it tasted fine.

We had to dogs with us and the pub is dog friendly and we sat just a step away from a large conservatory. The menu was comprehensive and the food prices were something of a balance with sandwiches and baguettes being competitively priced at £5. The main meals were of course more expensive at £12 plus and I would simply say that I wouldn't pay any more than the present price level.

The service was good in all respects, a strange thing to comment on was the serviettes, which were very high quality. The mid-lunch period was fairly busy on a very pleasant day, which was encouraging for the new owners.

I would have awarded a 'five star' rating but I was so disappointed to see beer prices set at £4.20 and £4.10 per pint for a 4%-ish ABV beer and that was very disappointing. There is no reason why, in accordance with local beer prices just a few miles away, why the '£4 barrier' should have been breached. The draft cask beer was over-priced. Accordingly we had 1.5 pints vice 2 pints.

Overall the visit was a pleasant experience and the pub is recommended. Lower those beer prices a bit and five stars is up for grabs.

Been many times and is now under new management.
Went yesterday lunchtime with a group of 6. So far they have got off to a good start. Service was attentive without being overbearing. All the staff were friendly, polite and knew their job and were happy to accommodate our requests. Food was very good, even one of our party who can be a bit fussy !!! enjoyed and finished his meal. Excellent value for money. Long may it continue and keep up the good work.

The food was well cooked and came quickly. We were late booking but still got a table. The service was prompt. All in allele worth it, the pub deserves to succeed. Like most pub /restaurants, there was no low alcohol drink available, just the usual fizzy stuff. I would go back.
