We only spent 1 day in Chidambaram during our two-month South Indian adventure. We found Dhaya Mansion (the sign said Thaya Lodge) just by walking around. It was cheap (550 Rs for a double room) so we decided to stay. We had gotten used to inspecting everything (lock on door, bars on window, water faucets, shower, toilet, sheets) so we discovered the shower didn't work. As a result we got "The Nice Room"! The way the clerk said it was so funny... But it's just an average room, with some plastic flowers in a vase and a working shower.
There was some construction going on at ground level, but that didn't bother us. The way to our room was a bit strange, go right on some stairs, up one floor, pass the children's clinic and the long cue of people, pass reception (seems to be a different building), long hallway, than our room. Location is good, very close to the Nataraja temple, the main attraction in Chidambaram.
The outside of the building is a little misleading, it's a modern glass and steel facade that has nothing to do with the look on the inside.
Well, everything was ok, except for the huge cockroach we killed in "the nice room". As we left, the clerk greeted us with "No tip for me?". There was no tip for him...More
