“Tamil Nadu's Fawlty Towers”
Reviewed 14 February 2011

There aren't many hotel options in this part of Tamil Nadu and Paradise Resort is probably as good as anything you are going to find in this area. This is a good base for exploring Trichy, Tanjavore and other towns in the area.

Rooms are reasonably clean and beds are comfy.

Lots of service problems:
Hot water stopped working
Telephone in room didn't work
No bottled water in room
Room not cleaned for two days

When I spoke with the front desk there would invariably be lots of running around and promises to fix everything. But no action. Eventually things were sorted out.

This is an amazing place to see birds.

Food in the restaurant is good and the staff is helpful and friendly.

Very nice resort with good size rooms and big bathrooms. Their restaurant has a nice selection of food and their breakfast spread has many options. The staff were very friendly and helpful to us pointing out the nearby temples and attractions to see. They provided breakfast to my driver which is a nice touch :) Must see is the Darasuram temple a UNESCO heritage sight and the closeby bronze making artisans who use the old method of making bronze statues till date. Take the bullock cart ride from the main resort to their extension at the back, it is a fun ride. They have some great massage packages wish I had made the time for that. Definitely will return here if i visit south india again. Location is great to see trichy and tanjore temples too.

The setup is a bit strange, but grows on you. The hotel is in 2 parts. At the front are the restaurant, conventional rooms, and a multifunction hall (fun to watch if their is a wedding or some other party). Cross the dirt track at the back (beside some village houses), and you get to the back part, which has some service buildings, a bronzemaking shop, and then another 30 or so huts by a field and river called the riverside rooms. A bullock cart can take you back and forth but it is quite easy to walk.

We stayed in the riverside rooms
Pluses
- Very clean, quite comfortable beds, spacious
- Relatively quiet and serene by the river/field (though you do hear trucks honking on the road in the distance)
- Quite entertaining to watch all that is happening
- Restaurant breakfast was delicious and menu has anything you would need for all meals
- Convenient place for a 1-2 night stay if you are doing the temple circuit (e.g. if you stay 2 days you can make a day trip to see several of the temples to the northeast and not have to move around so much)

Minuses
- The riverside is a 5-10 min walk (or bullock ride) from the restaurant, and the mozzies are out in the evenings
- The restaurant is not bad, but the Indian food is a bit bland (spicing seems to be toned down) and is about 30% overpriced for the quality

All in all, if you have fixed ideas of what a hotel/resort *should* be like, you may be disappointed. If you like quirkiness, you will have a fine time.

Kumbakonam is a pretty remote area on the Tamil Nadu temple trail and it seems that this hotel is frequented by quite a few group-travel companies. We stopped at this hotel for only one night as part of a group and most members of our group had different experiences of this hotel.

One of the main reasons for many of our group's dissatisfaction with this property was that the rooms we stayed in (riverside rooms) had only very recently been completed, and several of them were in fact not ready to be inhabited. The riverside area is quite mosquito-prone, yet none of the beds had mosquito nets, nor did the windows have screens. In addition, some rooms had no air conditioning (or electricity that cut out when the A/C was used, some also had no fan and most did not even have a plug-in mosquito repellant (nor were any available on request). As a result, some in our group were absolutely savaged by mosquitoes and were left uncomfortable for several days.

These rooms have the potential to be so beautiful, and for my part I really hope that they get it together, as they are so close to making this a beautiful place to stay. The rooms are beautifully constructed, with exposed beams, whitewashed walls, mosaic floors, luxurious bathrooms etc. However, all of the beauty of this becomes less of a focus for guests when the electricity cuts out permanently, the shower is cold and you find yourself in constant darkness because you can't open a window for fear of being eaten by mosquitoes! But back to the positives: the furniture is all beautiful dark wood antique and the beds are soooo comfortable. The surfaces and bedding was clean and lovely.

I hesitated a lot when it came to rating service and I'll expand on this. I think the service is well-intentioned, but I think for this establishment to step up when it comes to service they need to train all staff on the expectations of international guests. Many times during our brief stay here I heard staff members arguing with guests about requests or complaints that guests were making. Although this is not uncommon when travelling in India, I feel it's one of the few things letting this hotel down and should be addressed, as staff need to be able to accept and deal with customer complaints with the courtesy and diplomacy expected of the international hospitality industry. For example, several people in our group found inaccurate charges had been added to their bills. It was obvious that this was an error of the hotel and through no fault of guests, but in this case guests were made to feel like they were behaving dishonestly. In the restaurant, guests were pressured to order buffet meals and then ignored by staff when they chose not to do so. I witnessed several guests get frustrated and a little angry, and instead of dealing with this by stepping up the service and smiles, staff members further ignored them. I saw this behaviour as staff feeling inequipped to deal with difficult customers and situations and it was a little heartbreaking to watch it all play out as training staff in these very skills is so widespread in the west!

Hmmm... more positives? The gift shop was nice, not too overpriced and really refreshingly, the staff were really NOT pushy. The pool was absolutely beautiful and so clean. Technically, we arrived after the allowed swimming hours, but after a long day in a bus, we were so grateful to be provided with towels by the attendant and to luxuriate in the pool, which was steaming in the evening air. Definitely one of the more beautiful moments here. I also liked the bullock ride, and LOVED seeing the baby goats which were born the night we were there... which also explained the crazy animals screams we heard in the night. Poor mum!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Paradise Resort is centrally located for 3 world Heritage UNESCO Monuments and all Navagraha and other important temples. With great ambience built on south Indian rich heritage style, spread in around 12 acres of vast lush and greenery, situated in a Highway and ends at River view is indeed one of its kind to offer you Culture and Pilgrim tour combined with complete relaxation and rejuvenationParadise Resort is a Government of India approved 3 star property on the Tanjore Highway at a five minute distance from Darasuram Iravadeeshwarar temple (World Heritage UNESCO Monument). Situated amidst lush lawns and plenty of greenery the resort is a retreat for the tired traveler. The resort comes from the belief that south Indian tradition culture and heritage which has got a rich legacy has to be promoted and therefore we have made our spacious rooms in traditional ambience. With 150 year old antique doors in each of the rooms the furniture with intricate work of teak wood again transports one to an era of life of the south Indians those days. But again the spacious bathroom in each of the rooms has a bathtub or a cubicle and is very sophisticated. The Restaurant with arches and windows of the yesteryears and tables and chairs with work and craftsmanship of Burmese teak is a feast for the eyes. The resort is known for its food which again depicts a lot of traditional elements in its cuisine. The massive swimming pool is again a highly relaxing place. The very attractive and appealing swimming pool is done up with the latest Italian glass tiles. The view from the 6 pool view rooms is breathtaking. Our new additions are the river view cottages again done in traditional style and having awesome ambience. We are also supported by a village behind the property; guests can be taken for a village walk in which more than getting to see village houses and their lifestyle, there is a village temple with big Iyyanar statues (village security god). Bullock cart rides to temples near by, excursions to Weaving industry, pottery making, and bronze making industry can also be done.Other activities could be fishing in the river, visit to agricultural fields and showing the process of cultivation. Organization of lots of traditional games inside the resort would be an added pleasure.Cultural performances like folk dances which are very special to the localite like thappattam (a traditional Tamil dance) is also done. A lot of work goes into more innovative activities to make the stay more than pleasurable a memorable one. ... more   less
