“one of the most relaxing places to stay in Kerala”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 August 2012

(Actually visited Dec 2009 - apologies for the delay)
Rosie and her family’s charming homestay, secluded on the beautiful and peaceful northern Keralan coastline, is a welcoming retreat. The family, who like many Keralans have worked overseas (in this case Singapore), are lovely. Each modest room has a veranda or balcony overlooking a creek towards the beach. It’s very easy to while away hours reading beneath the palms or lolling in a hammock. The food is really delicious and varied. An easy walk brings you to beaches so stunning that you might be on a film set. Backed by shimmering coconut palms, with balmy seas, occasional friendly locals and sometimes dolphins, it seems incredible they are so untouched and un-touristed. There are other guesthouses nestling among the palms and paddies behind, and perhaps more since our visit, but this coastline more than rivals the parts of northern Goa I have visited.
And there is the curious culture of this part of Kerala: spectacular theyyam performances in and around temples, rumours of which reach Rosie, who then arranges transport. Kannur Beach House also organises trips aboard lovely traditional barges in the less visited backwaters of northern Kerala. This rice boat had a large deck – perfect for watching the world go by down the pretty backwaters and eating superb food. The crew was charming and service excellent.
Rosie can also arrange trips to the wildlife park of Wayanad, staying at a remote guesthouse whose kind manager cannot do too much – including inviting us to his home where we met his wife, which was lovely.
For a complete change of pace, visit Kannur – a bustling and friendly city, where you can shop for kurtas in modern malls and old-fashioned stores (ask Rosie) – we still have some of our favourites clothes from here.
In short, Kannur Beach House is one of the loveliest and most relaxing places to stay in Kerala.

This is the perfect place to escape from everything. We spent 3 days there around Easter but wish it could have been 3 weeks. Rosie, Nazir and family were extremely welcoming and genuine, and treat you as friends rather than just customers. It's not a luxury set-up, but the bare pared-down vibe, simple rooms with balconies overlooking the lagoon and the beach, helps you relax. If it's on offer, don't miss the 4am Theyyam ceremony - one of the highlights of our trip to Kerala.

We had a great few days at the beach house. The food was delicious and it was the perfect place to relax. The beach was pretty much deserted each day, and we saw lots of interesting wildlife- such as dolphins and kingfishers. Rosie and Dan

The location of this homestay is utterly paradisical. It's at the nexus of a river and the ocean (with a lovely, empty beach). You even have to walk over a little bridge to get to the house. Just perfect. The house itself is a mix of a lovely bed and breakfast and something tropical out of Swiss Family Robinson. Loved the open air dining area and stairway to our room upstairs. Our room had a great view of the beach and lagoon and in the morning we got to watch local Moplah fishermen (both in the inlet and in boats out on the water). The area has a ton of wildlife and the Beach House has a canoe you can take on the backwaters.

The food is great and its a lot of fun to have the hosts living on-site. It seems that many of the homestays don't have actual families living on-site anymore but I'm glad we picked a homestay with a family. It adds such an cultural experience and makes it so much more memorable. Nazir and his family are a treat. The food was great and truly authentic Keralan cuisine (it's featured in Lonely Planet and all kinds of other guides).

My only comment would be to have soap and toilet paper in the rooms. Also, there's no AC in the rooms, which is probably not an issue for most but we were there in the hottest month of the year so it was a little hot.

Room Tip: Make sure to go on some of the walks that the hosts will suggest.

Most of the young backpacker set I met in India has their eyes set on the Goa region for a relaxing/partying beach stop as a part of a larger Indian adventure. If you are looking for a cleaner alternative and dont mind missing the orgiastic Goa, the Kannur Beach House* is probably your best choice.

Now, I put that asterisk there because the Kannur Beach House isn't a place but really a series of houses, each with their own particular feel (TripAdvisor's listings for this property are woefully insufficient). These houses dot Ezhara Beach for about 3-4 miles down the coast from the city of Kannur, all nestled in a true palm forest (which is quite a sight).

My lady and I were personally treated to the amazing, two room house called Kera that is a part of the secondary Theeram network (http://www.theeram.in/) of the Kannur Beach House circuit that Rosi, the owner, is constructing.

Again, the usual India caveats apply here at the Kera: no hot water/AC, bugs o'plenty and terrible beds. But you do get new construction, suite rooms, bug netting on your bed, hygienic linens, a western toilet and two delicious meals of coastal Indian fare daily. By Indian standards, this collection of niceties probably equates to being a 4-star accommodation. And let's not forget a great porch and roof deck that has views I'd challenge you to top at any other beach worldwide. Seriously.

The biggest downside to this oasis is also its biggest asset: it's nearly impossible to find. Northern Kerala/Kannur is off the tourist beat already and this series of houses is almost impossible to find, mostly because India doesn't really use a Western series of street addresses. A seasoned car hire from Mysore had to pull a local into the car to guide us there. I'd recommend arriving while it's still light; our nighttime arrival only complicated things.

But more than anything with the Kera, you get clean and you get quiet. Those are two things I didnt see anywhere else in India. If that's what you want, Kannur Beach House is where you should go.

Room Tip: I stayed in the right (southern) suite of the Kera house that is a part of the Theeram network (http...
