“Great Stay in Costa 2”
Reviewed 21 February 2012

We were lucky in that a room was available in Costa 2 for the 3 nites which is right on the seashore. There are 3 houses each with about 5 rooms and beautifully managed by the "gracious host" Kurien - the food is simple veggie Keralan, not the haute cuisine as suggested in some guidebooks, Kingfisher is available. we would not have enjoyed this idyllic spot if we had been accommodated in one of the other locations - so book well ahead.

Room Tip: For most pleasure get Costa2, perhaps stay in 1 or 3 for the first nite.

My husband and I stayed here for three nights, and it was great. We stayed at Costa 2, which is situated on a cliff right by the beach (access to beach by a set of stairs). This is definitely the property you want, as the others are a few km from the beach. The beach is small, private, nice sand, and warm water. The rooms are VERY basic-- nothing more than a bed, fan, and a wooden desk. The food was tasty, but simple, and we also had lots of fresh juices. Other reviewers complain that the owner is never around, but to me this was a nice plus-- I felt that we were being left alone to just relax and enjoy the sun and the beach, and that is what we did. The owner came by every evening around dinner time and was very helpful in answering our questions, and arranged for us to see Theyyam, which is pretty neat. We also visited the local handloom cooperative, which was very interesting. The property is not beautiful, and I agree with other reviewers that some minor sprucing up would go a long way. There are only a few rooms in Costa 2, and the other travelers we met were really lovely people.

Room Tip: Make sure you request Costa 2 if you want to be on the beach.

We stayed here for two nights and we came to Kannur to see the ritual of Theyam. We knew it might be difficult to organise, but the owner organised everything and it was very smooth - the ceremony was wonderful. He also helped us arrange rickshaws and even an early breakfast when we had to leave early. The meals were great and very good value - lots of fresh fruit, lassis and as many cups of chai as you can drink. The other travellers were great fun. The beach is nice, and we visited the handloom factory in town - an interesting experience. Definitely recommend.

We stayed in the cliff house (Costa Malabari II) for a couple of nights. When we first arrived, we had the beach literally to ourselves. Great location, watching the sunset from a dekchair on the cliff, listening to the sounds of the waves.
A big thank you to the wonderful cook, the food is absolutely fantastic! It´s also a treat for the eyes since all the colours come out nicely as food is served on bananaleaves.
The host, Mr. Kurien, is very knowledgeable on Theyyem dance rituals, and he arranged for us to attend a dance in the hinterland of Kannur. Spectacular ! If you wish to know more about this ancient ritual, read " Nine lives" by William Dalrymple, he has a chapter on a dancer from Kannur.
Would love to return and attend more Theyyem rituals. May be next winter, who knows.
Thank you for your hospitality !

Room Tip: Top room in the house on the cliff
