“Beautiful setting!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 March 2011

We had a fantastic stay at the Malabar, it's a little gem in the quiet part of Kannur. The service and food were outstanding. Sunil the owner couldn't do enough for us, always with a smile! Sunil collected us from the railway station on our arrival and took us there on departing. During our stay we were fortunate enough to experience Theyyam (hindu ritual), kalari (martial art) and Sunil also took us to see St Angelo's Fort. All of which were well worth a look and enriched our indian experience.

The hotel is small, quiet and positioned opposite a beautiful and tranquil beach, felt like our own private beach during our stay! We swam every day, the surf is quiet strong but good fun. We made friends with some lovely people staying at the hotel and found the atmosphere very friendly and welcoming. Ayurvedic massages are also available at the hotel.

It was a perfect taste of paradise for 5 days for us during our travel through India. We highly recommend staying here for rest and relaxation.

Located 1 block back from Thottada Beach, my partner and I found our stay at The Malabar Beach to be relaxing and enjoyable. The food at breakfast and dinner was great and the staff were friendly and attentive to our requests. There wasnt really a lunch service as such but we had toasted sandwiches delivered to our table on the balcony. We stayed for 4 days and the two highlights for us were the quiet isolated beach and the Theyyam ritual that Sunil took us to visit. There are a couple of other accomodation options at the other end of the beach and there is a seperate and as yet unopened set of one storey rooms on the block in front of the property. However at times we were the only people on the beach. The water clarity at the beach was less clear than what I am used to living in Western Australia but in general while we were there the beach was clean and very quiet.

The rooms were new and comfortable with a flashy exterior. There was an issue with the hot water but Sunil rectified this immediately. There is cable tv for those who require that and free wifi. I used the staff computer and the internet connection was very fast compared to other places where I have paid to use the net. There was no bar fridge in the rooms but you can use the kitchen fridge. We chose the non ac fan room on the top floor and (in January) it was not too hot and got a pleasant sea breeze in the evenings. There are ocean views from the balcony through a stand of Palm trees and above the rooms in front.

Myself and a friend stayed here for 3 nights in December and really liked it. Sunil, the owner, is absolultely lovely, he couldn't do enough for us. The place is situated outside Kannur, right beside the beach. It's like having your own private beach. I don't understand the other review here that says the beach is dirty, we swam there every day and it was glorious (see pics).
Sunil really was a lovely host, he even brought us on a little whirlwind tour to see the Theyyam, and then brought us to see some weavers, and a few more stops along the way. He volunteered to get up at 5.30 am to do this, so really I think it would be hard to find a more dedicated host.
Our room was very nice - with a great balcony, and old school deck chairs outside to relax on to the sound of the waves. This is a great place to unwind, and you can catch a cab into Kannur from here in about 15 minutes.

I had the unfortunate experience of staying at this "resort" in December 2010. I had booked for 4 nights but left after 2 nights due to the many shortcomings in comfort and service.

The manager / owner Sunil advised that he would arrange a driver to pick us up from Kannur railway station but when we arrived there was nobody there. We had to ask a stranger at the station to phone Sunil from the railway station who then advised us to find a taxi to bring us over - this was at our expense. Sunil did not offer to pay the taxi fare but more significantly and disappointingly he did NOT offer any kind of apology for not being there. Instead he justified the no-show by saying that the train was late so his driver left. I wonder if he has ever heard of checking the train status? It is very easy to do in India.

Although the "resort" is new, it seems very little thought has gone into the design. The rooms had very little ventilation and were very hot inside. You could not open the windows because of the mosquitoes at dawn and dusk. The mattresses were just a block of hard foam and very uncomfortable. There were no sheets at all, we had to ask for bedsheets to protect against the mosquitoes. And when we asked, they provided tablecloths which didn't even cover the feet! Bizarre...

There was no hot water for bathing, but maybe that is a good thing because the two towels provided were not big enough to cope with the four people staying in the room. I doubt they would have sufficed for two people, as they were very small. After two days of no bathing, we just had to leave.

The breakfasts (which were included in the room rate) were merely passable. If you are looking for the famous Kerala homestyle breakfast, then look elsewhere because here at this resort, the same guy who was sweeping the floor is the same guy who made the breakfast which was scrambled eggs of some description and toast / roti - nothing famously Keralan about it at all.

The other meals provided were made off site and carried to the resort either on Sunil's motorbike or his car, and merely reheated by the single staff member on site. If you think you are going to get homestyle living, homestyle Keralan foods, homestyle atmosphere, then think again. This is a very cheap attempt at a cross between a resort / homestay concept but it just does not work.

Another problem was the dirty beach. The beach is actually filthy and the first sight to greet us when we walked the 100 - 150 metres from the resort to the beach was a bunch of old shoes and the remains of a fire on the beach. The sand is coarse and not really very nice. Also, Sunil has built some sort of structure which you literally have to climb over, in order to get to the beach. It is supposed to become a restaurant in the future, but I think it is just more bad planning. At the moment it is just a concrete slab blocking your way to the beach.

To conclude I must say, my advice is to give this place a miss.
