“Well run”
Reviewed 16 April 2012

Stayed in cottage with small garden and personal outdoor eating area. The staff were very helpful. The decor was a bit dated and eclectic though everything worked well. Very efficient and reasonably priced overnight laundry service. Food in restaurant is good. Excellent location and well run though the whole place could do with some refurbishment and the windows need to be cleaned. .

worst ripoff i ever experienced in india. the hotel is not too bad, indian midrange, simple breakfast included, friendly but not very helpful personal, no maps of sanchi’s environment, no internet, average food, nice courtyard, strange swimmingpool with indian style spa, both not accessible when i was there end of 2011. the rooms are a small, the bathroom is like bathrooms usually are in india. 800 rups would be a fair price for a double, but they charge 3 times as much. you have to order online with your credit card at mptourism. only ac-rooms are being offered, for about 2000 rups, 20% added because it’s high season most of the time (the hotel is nevertheless empty). you have to agree that no refund is given. once you are there you are told that you have to pay another 13% tourist tax and luxury tax (after all it’s a state owned enterprise). it can also happen, as it happened to me, that a private party is taking place from 7pm until after midnight with a sound system that blows off your head even if you use earplugs. i was silly enough to order a room via internet and to pay in advance, because it was the only place in town with an email-adress or website, and it was recommended by some tripadvisor contributors as the best deal available. this i found untrue on arrival. best two deals (both next to the train station) (a) sri lanka mahabodhi society guest house: new building with beautifully furnished spacious rooms with attached bath for 1000 rups per night (simple double bedrooms with common bath in the old but renovated 2-storey-building around a nice courtyard for 200 rups per night), tel 0(091)7482-262739; (b) jaiswal lodge behind jaiswal restaurant 0(091)7482-266508 or 0(091)88778292508 mobile, 6 doubles from 450 to 750 rupees. to stay in sanchi is worthwhile because of the ashoka stupas and the magnificent gateways covered with intricately carved reliefs about buddhas life.

It is a nice property, with cottages spread around a central courtyard....with nice peaceful atmosphere.......only it is not maintained well like all state run hotels......rooms are not very clean...just manageable....service is ok....in peak periods the staff seems inadequate......but you have no better choice if you want to stay in Sanchi.......Bhopal is a better option .

Location is great ,walking distance from the Buddhist monuments.......oh yes,it has a swimming pool also ...where kids had fun.

The place is more like a resort than a hotel. It has a very pleasant garden, terrace, swimming pool and the rooms are scattered in a kind of small park. Some villa type rooms are also available nd then you get your own garden space. We stayed in a family room, which are a super good deal comparing to the others in term of price. The worst thing is the reception, as often in government run places ! Receptionists have no idea what they are doing and saying. And definitely this does not leave a good impression on travelers. But Sanchi dont have many places to stay, and the gateway retreat is the best among the few others

Options decidedly limited so this may be the best in town. It is possible the deluxe suites are worth the extra price. In my 4 trips to India I have been comfortable in basic hotel rooms, but I've been in few as poorly maintained as this one. Water stains on the wall. Toilet seat not attached. Toilet leaked. Mattress 3 inches thick. Lighting consisted of one florescent tube. There is a health spa on site which defies imagination. Unusable by any sane person. Had an excellent meal with excellent service upon arrival. Ordered the same the following day and the food was sort of edible and took over an hour to arrive. Bed tea was prompt and the manager did volunteer to take us to the train station upon departure. This hotel is run by the state government. The Buddhist site on the hill is magnificent. The "Sanchi Deluxe" rickshaw the way to travel.
