We had an amazing stay at Abel Tasman Backpackers. Located just a short 5 minute drive from the national park, this hostel is a great place to go for a rustic vibe right in the wilderness but with every amenity you would ever need. Stu & Andi were the most amazing hosts we had throughout our entire trip of the South Island. They were always available and keen to help with all activity planning and information about the park and surrounding area. Their passion for ensuring their guests have the best experience possible is unparalleled and inspiring. As 2 young travellers, we would recommend this destination to anyone and hope that we will make it back there ourselves one day soon.

This was our favourite hostel during our one month trip in New Zealand. We arrived for the first time on the 23rd of December, before starting our Abel Tasman Great Walk on the next morning. The dormitory room, the communal toilet and shower are really clean. The kitchen is well equipped. This place is really comfortable and gives you a home-feeling.

The owners, Stu & Andi, are really friendly and they care about their guests. Stu even offered us to check our backpack before we left for our multi-day tramping, making sure that we didn't bring too many stuff along. We enjoyed our first stay in this accommodation and decided to come back again after finishing the great walk. On our second stay, Stu offered some fresh basils from his little garden for our dinner. He gave us a lot of tips, what we should see and how we should arrange our routes in the South Island. He also gave some recommendations where we could stay in other cities. We loved his recommendations.

I definitely recommend this accommodation!

This was an absolutely wonderful place to stay - we wish we had more time here!

My wife and I were traveling in NZ on our honeymoon and came to Abel Tasman to kayak.

The accommodations here are lovely and more importantly the owners/proprietors are so helpful and friendly!

We were doing an early morning kayak and were looking for a place to eat breakfast. The owner called around to find out what time people were opening in the morning and then directed us to eat at Hooked On Marahau which was delicious. We had the perfect amount of time to eat before the kayak.

As we are early risers, he also directed us to a wonderful spot to watch the sunrise.

The spirit at this place is wonderful and we highly recommend it here. Tucked away on a quiet hill, the setting is beautiful. And just a short walk from town.

Thank you for your wonderful review!
It was very nice to have met you both and stay with us here at Kanuka Ridge Abel Tasman Backpackers.
We are very pleased to know you enjoyed your stay with us, the breakfast at the waterfront and one of our amazing sunrises here in Marahau.
We hope the kayaking went well and the rest of your trip here in NZ.
All the best Stuart and Andrea

We arrived at Kanuka very late on 4th April in the dark.

We were still greeted at reception, by the friendlist owner we have met in backpacking accomodation yet. Sadly we can't remember the names but the couple had just taken over ownership in the last few days and i think it was their first evening left alone to manage. They were lovely- they told us how to get down to the front for dinner as all shops were shut. Showed us the facilities and room. The room was all we needed, a bunk bed in private chalet. The seperate shower block was clean and warm and reminded me of going camping! The kitchen etc was a small block but so homely and had all we needed. we were the only two staying, with one other lady in the chalet next door who was lovely and slipped us a note into our food box in the kitchen, with the wifi code on. In the morning we went to reception and chatted to the lovely couple who called to ask about kayaks, sadly that day they were not hiring out ANY kayaks on abel tasman due to bad weather. So he suggested a water taxi and to walk out of the park.He booked it for us (we paid them) We did this and it was brill even in the rain. The next morning we set off for Kaikoura (which was due some bad weather - ended up being the end of Cyclone Debbie so we made it to kaikoura only to have to leave again strait away as it was going to be cut off), anyway in the morning the owners waved us off and wished us safe travels and even showed us their ideas for a working backpacker lodge. Thanyou to you both for being so welcoming it really is what we remember most and wish we remembered your names.
Literally the ONLY thing i would suggest is Lighting up the drive and around the lodges. It was very hard to see our way in and to see from our lodge to the toilet block in the night there was no light. xx
I would suggest to anyone staying - DO NOT ARRIVE IN THE DARK - its not worth it as shops shut and it very remote (but near the kayaking area for the park) so arrive in the day and explore the bush its wonderful.

Thank you for your lovely review, we are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us at Kanuka Ridge backpackers and the Abel Tasman National Park.
You will be pleased to know that we have installed a number of Solar lights in the areas that you have spoken of and have spent the winter months redecorating the backpackers to which we hope is a higher standard.
We are about to reopen in October.
Cheers
Stuart and Andrea

A group of ten of us stayed at Kanuka ridge and were given great hospitality from the moment we arrived. The shared room had a small deck and was only a short walk to the communal showers and kitchen which were very clean and well-equipped. The owners were happy to assist in lending bicycles and assisted in arranging transport to and from town. Was a lovely cosy place to stay after a long 3 day trip through the Abel Tasman.
