My Wife and I travelled in May for 2 weeks at the Lambros. Sophia is very friendly and welcoming. By way of a change we found we had selected a location which was beyond our best possible wishes. Across the road between the small pensions there and we were on the North facing (windy) beach. We did have several still days and it was very calm. small tavernas and bars in either direction onto the beach or into garden areas. Walking along the beack and over the small hill leads to the harbour, sheltered and with and abundance of Taveransa and quiet bars in which to enjoy an alcholic drink or a coffee etc, All very friendly. We were eating most nigts for around 17-30 euros for a starter, main and 1/2 litre of wine for the 2 of us. Clearly the price is okay- the excahnge rate makes it more expensive than ever before. Some Bars charge up to 3.80euro for a large Mythos and 4 euros for a Samos Brandy of Metaxa. More like town bar rates in the UK really, the difference is the people of Samos are by far the most friendly we have ever encountered offering a service you wil not get back home.
We used La Bussolla for our meals for more than half our stay. Every meal was superb and I can realy recommend the Lamb Kleftiko and the Beef Stamna, oh and the Moussaka and....!!!) Alfa bar just east of the Hotel was our favourite for pre dinner drinks or the second bar over the bridge in the harbour (smaller bar with blue chairs and tall electric lights- no name though). He served my Wife the best hot chocolate ever (but it was 4 euros!) also intoduced mr to Samos Brandy as an alternative to Metaxa- so good I bought a bottle.
Back to the Lambros. Typically basic greek room. Few extras like a small hairdryer and a mozzie plug, but 15 euros a week for a fridge and 10 for a safe are very steep, after a 2 week stay I could buy a fridge at home!. The beds were harder than normal and although a reasonable breakfast with yummy home made jams I felt that it was average. The rooms and balcony were also average altough freshly painted and smart. We had selected a hotel with a small bar as we like to meet other guests and exchange information but unfortunately the bar is simply not stocked or open. I found that mildly annoying albeit as previously- and excellent assortment nearby.
I would not tell anyone not to use the Lambros as clearly a lot of people love the place but we have experienced better Small and Friendly Thomson hotels. We would revisit the island again but look for alternate accomodation in Kokkari.
We loved Samos, probably the best Island we have visited, so 'not touristy'!! Shame it doesn't have a couple of really nice sandy beaches. We toured all over and even those in the South West were not a touch on those on other Islands, that said the snorkeling was excellent as a result with crystal clear water everywhere.
The Waterfalls near Ptima are wortha visit and a nice shady walk alongside a bubbling stream. Vourlates and Manolates are 2 beautiful mountain villages close to Kokkari.
