“Ayurvedic garden at the lagoon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2012

This hotel is impressive, as a combination of a beautiful nature with stylish architecture. It is located in a huge, beautiful, ayurvedic garden at the lagoon. Service is superb.
Lobby is build in a form of a palace, as an open pavilion, , furnished with antiquities, among them huge statue of Shiva Nataraja. "The walls" of this palace are made from the net, protecting against birds, and there are pools with exotic fish on the floor. Jungle enters this charming and luxurious place.
The reception was very good, we were tired after travelling in Karnataka province, and we had nice welcome. Our room was overlooking the lagoon (as probably most of the rooms) and luckily it was the first lagoon counting from the sea, which was very convenient, as we were close to the beach. There was a shuttle service to the beach, but it was nice to be conveniently located, as the hotel is really enormous and there is a lot of walking.
Between the beach and the hotel is a golf course, which adds charm to the landscape, with pink water lilies in small pools and green palms on a green grass - very picturesque.
The beach is very wide, enormous! And the sea is nice, however as there is a river nearby, it is not really clean and blue.
Morning and evening walks on a beach are safe and enjoyable, with a beautiful view to the distant mountains. For a change, you can take a hotel bike (complimentary) and ride to the beach or to the garden.
Rooms are spacious in colonial style, comfortable and well kept, with fruit basket served every morning and fresh water, there also are coffee and tea facilities in the room, morning newspaper etc - all these little things which make your life enjoyable.
Our little terrace allowed us to watch the bird at the lagoon - great variety of spacies, including King Fisher!
Breakfast was delicious - again, served in an open pavilion overlooking the golf-course, with variety of International and Asian food.
UNFORTUNATELY, we did not take half-board as we were mislead by tips of travellers that in Goa best food is in shacks on the beach. Well, in this point I do not agree. We wanted to try the local colour and in effect we suffered. Shack serve very basic food, fish with a lot of bones, crab with no meat, prices are European for a food which does not meet any standards, very disappointing. It is much better to take half board (although they have sort of complicated system, it is not just a buffet and you cannot have everything) and, then, if you really must try shack - you can do it once or two. The restaurant in Leela is superb, the lamb I had there was the best in the world, selection of wine was gorgeous and the atmosphere was - simply unforgettable!
What I did not like was the way they calculated drinks. I.e - ordering Campari and soda you were charged separately for Campari and soda, so the price doubled. I do not like this sort of tricks in first class hotels - but really, this is the only thing to complain.
I love Leela, and I would love to stay in such a hotel again, but not in Goa - as for me one week in Goa is just enough.
The hotel was a wonderful experience, it is worthwhile to stay there, to live in the bungalow at the lagoon, walk through the alleys of the garden with statues of Indian Gods (by the way - staff worshipped these Gods, praying to them in the morning) - unforgettable!

Room Tip: At the circular lagoon, at the first lagoon from the beach

Just got back from the Leela in Goa. Initially I was quite apprehensive of the property after reading the reviews here and since we were travelling with a baby we decided to have our options open in case things went wrong.

And boy did they initially! The airport transfer was an old coach bus which was full, and felt crampt in the hour long drive from the airport. Check in was quick but the rooms were damp when we walked in. To make things worse as soon as we opened one of the room a RAT dropped from the fan.

To the hotel's credit they promptly sent the housekeeping to remove the rat.

From there, it was nothing but exceptional service and a great experience. The property is huge on the beachfront with a small golf course. The restaurants had good food and great service.

The finishes in the hotel are traditional but upscale and the rooms are well made. Our rooms were overlooking the lagoon and it was a very peaceful site to watch the ducks in the morning.

The hotel is resort style of course so all around there was a lot to do, great for the kids. Lots of families stay here so it was a really cheerful atmosphere.

Overall if the few shortcomings for check in and room preparation can be sorted, this would be right up there with the best in India.

Room Tip: The ground floor lagoon rooms have a better view as you are right on the lagoon, however they get da...

Dear Guest,

Thank you for being our guest and for taking the time to post your feedback.

We are very happy that you overall had a comfortable stay and that we were able to overcome the initial inconveniences.

Whilst we do have an effective pest control program, due to the dense vegetation around the hotel rooms, it is possible that at times, we have an aberration. Please be assured that immediate instructions to this effect were given to our pest control professionals to ensure corrective measures.

Thank you once again and we look forward to welcoming you back to The Leela Goa.

Yours sincerely,

The first thing that hits you when you are on your way to the resort is that it is reallllly far from the airport and civilization in general.. that could be a positive or negative depending upon what you are looking for. The property is very nice and makes you look forward to the rest of the trip. We stayed in the Lagoon Terrace Room and it was good but not great and definitely not 'spacious' as other reviewers have written. The bathroom is nice with Villeroy & Boch sanitary fittings and an automated blind.

AND then comes the damper - the toiletries. If you are particular about this (I am), I'd suggest carry your own. They have their own stuff in a packaging that inspires no confidence whatsoever in the quality. I'm sure Leela can easily afford a Forest Essentials or Molton Brown and if not, then take a cue from the Bellagios and the Langhams on how to make private labels LOOK worthy of being in a five star!

The next put off for me was the staff. They look constipated all the time and barring 1 or 2 people, none of them should be in the hospitality industry at all.. they either don't smile or would smile like someone put a gun on their head. Twice we asked to be dropped by the carts and on both occasions the driver was far from welcoming and so were the servers, the front desk, and the Concierge (she was only interested in selling their own tours)!! Isn't that the first thing a good hotel should focus on?! Poor service is definitely a deal breaker for me.

And I don’t get what’s the deal with a guy shouting Private Bar and ringing the bell at 8 every morning to check what you’ve consumed!!! I hated waking up to that every single day and asking him to go away!! Why they can’t do that before checking out or when housekeeping comes for cleaning is beyond my comprehension.
For the first time in my life I was not sad that my vacation was coming to an end.

The hotel is no doubt the best located in Goa.The suites facing the Lagoon are by far one of the best accomodation I have stayed.Suites are spacious and were recently furbished.Room service needs improvement .The front desk staff was helpful but there were no smiles as one expects in Goa which is full of lovely friendly people.Stay was very comfortable.
Amit Chaudhari

Room Tip: The suites facing the lagoon should be preferred.
