We stayed at this all inclusive hotel for 5 days, we enjoyed the welcoming and friendly atmosphere and the warmth of the staff, considering what they earn they really make an effort to make the guests feel well looked after.
The hotel is well run, the food is good for the price you pay (not a very expensive hotel) and is always fresh and well presented with a variety of dishes including Kenyan food which we liked.
Loved the tea/coffee and cake in the afternoon and the unlimited drinks.
The premises were always clean and our family room was spotless!
I'd say this hotel is for everyone, adults and families with young kids.
For us, a stay of 5-7 days was enough, as being an all inclusive hotel you ran the risk of not going out at all and end up not seeing the real Kenya. It may suit other travellers though..
The grounds/gardens are very well maintained and big enough even at busy/peak times.
It is a busy hotel at day time but at night is very quiet.
We saw the 5 types of monkeys at the hotel which are found in Diani, even the shy bush babies!
Watch out for the cheeky monkeys stealing your food!
Please tip the staff generously as they really deserve it, we didn't tip everyone but the ones who we had had more contact during our stay and of course our room cleaner.
We would recommend this hotel and we will be back.

Papillon Reef is a very nice hotel and offers a good quality/price ratio. All good things mentioned in the reviews below are true - friendly and helpful staff, nice swiming pool area, reasonably tasty food. Beach boys may be irritating at first, but they also offer quite interesting ways to spend time - we used their services to go for a safari and twice for snorkelling and were entirely satisfied (of course, we had to negotiate prices first).
Food seems good at first, but could be more diverse. We were especially disappointed with the fact that no seafood was offered and fish was always served the same way (grilled).

Papillon is a classical beach hotel sold by tour operators with animation programm included every day, all inclusive programm with bier, wine and local alcohol included.
Rooms are a bit used, not very well cleaned as the housekeeping is realized by men, but if you go to Africa you count on these things. Hotel area and its gardens with the beach hamacas are separated by an elevated wall from the beach due to bit annoying local people who offering all the time local staff and safari excursions (however, dont be worry to negotiate with and buy, it is safe). You just cannot get them rid off as there are thousends of them in front of every hotel on the beach. Hotel gardes are very well kept and green with nice pool and restaurant area where every night evening progamm take place.Altough it is not the best hotel I have been in, it is definitelly ok and I would come back. Staff is very nice and helpfull.

We just returned from a great week in Kenya. Mombasa was a little overwhelming when we rode through after an all night flight. When we arrive at the hotel it felt very welcoming. Staff was across the board wonderful and the setting was beautiful.

We booked through a tour company and had a garden view room. Before we arrived we communicated with Anthony who set up the upgrade to an oceanfront room and communicated professionally via email and later in person. We loved the large room and spent time on the balcony watching the tide changes. Others kept the garden view rooms and were happy there as well.

The safari to the hotel's sister property was amazing. Be prepared for bumpy roads and traffic on the "highway" to the national park but don't miss the opportunity.

We enjoyed the food and the service. There was a variety at each meal and from day to day so we had plenty of choices. We had perfect weather and enjoyed eating outside under the trees.

Everything was clean and felt safe. It is not a chain hotel and we really liked the feel. The beach vendors were a bit annoying but we were able to enjoy daily walks on the beach without a problem. I would not hesitate to recommend it to others and would like to return someday.

After a stressful journey, getting to the Papillon was luxury. The welcome was very friendly. My sea facing room was wonderful and very clean. The staff could not do enough to make sure I was comfortable. I enjoyed the food very much. Would recommend this hotel highly.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view.
