“Holiday to paradise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 March 2012

My friend and I went on holiday to the southern Palms hotel in Kenya having been many times to Kenya before but not to this hotel.I read all the reviews before booking with Thomson after a long flight and it has to be said a long and tiring transfer we checked in to the Southern Palms The room was very good we were moved a few days later to a sea view due to AC fault this was handled very well by Betty customer relations who nothing was to much trouble for her to rectify.Cleanliness was brilliant and no problem all staff were helpful and polite, the beach is regulaly cleaned and is just beautiful the beach boys can be a pest but they stop bothering you after a day or so also hotel security keeps a very careful eye on them.so food we found the choice and quality overall very good this is due to the F and B manager Mr Mamoud Eldin who strives continuously to improve standards and has achieved this a very well done to him.
Service overall was excellent from the girl (Everlyn) who clened the bar area to Margret on ice cream who was simply beautifulI would also thank the two ladies in the internet office Mizzy and her friend who were so professional when i needed help with certain things.
So yes we are going back in Jan 2013 and cant wait a big thanks to all at Southern Palms for making our holiday so special.

Southern Palms Beach is a beautiful hotel situated by one of the finest coasts of Africa. With its friendly staff and more than adequate kitchen it is a true pleasure to stay here and enjoy the finest Kenya has to offer to its visitors.

The beautiful Diani beach is situated right in front of the hotel itself and we can really recommend visiting the reef which is accessible once a day when there is a low tide. While you are there you shouldn't miss out and do some snorkeling.

Getting to the reef by yourself will be hard to do and therefore we advice you to get help from one of the local people (they will transport you there using their mango tree boats). A WORD OF WARNING: There are countless kenians situated on the beach trying to sell you trips and offer you their services. The only person that we can SAFELY recommend and which we've had a fantastic time with is CAPTAIN ALEX. You can find him, or one of his friends, directly to the right when entering the beach from the hotel.

Captain Alex has shown us a great time in Kenya and has really helped us to get in touch with the people as well as the nature. We've booked multiple trips with him and every time the experience was amazing. His pricing is more than reasonable (and cheaper than booking through the hotel) and he has always made sure that all our needs were met in a professional manner, being on time with everything. You can reach him at telephone nr. 00245 718 764 198.

We're 100% certain that you will hear this many times over while in Kenya, but a safari is a not to miss once in a life oppurtunity which has given us some phenomenal photo's as well as some hard to forget memories (waking up and watching lion's roar and drink from a nearby lake was simply breath taking!)

Please also keep in mind that Kenya is a very poor country compared to ours and that any and all people are more than grateful to receive any of your old clothes or any aid at all. While we didn't think about this at first (this was our premiere visit in Africa) on hindsight we would've taken along many more old clothes. It was really eye-opening to see the unbalanced ways of the modern world ourselves.

Really nice hotel for the money and a huge pool. The staff are fantastic really friendly and helpful Beach really nice but get up early to grab a sun bed. Only downside are the pestering beach sellers although the hotel security keep them away from the top of the beach. If you want a good value and great safari experience book with Katuta at Kenya safaris www.kenya-safaris-Katuta.com [--] or just ask outside the main gate.

We chose this hotel in order to relax by the beach in safe environment after safari. Did we get what we wanted? I'd say yes. It was by the beach, it was safe, but...while we have traveled a lot, it was our first time in this type of hotel. And by this type, I mean AI, animation team and closed environment.

Beach: nice white sand, good swimming in the morning. Low tide reached its peak around 1 pm and you could not really swim between 11 a.m and 4 p.m because of low water and sharp corals. It was windy and there was lot of seaweed in the water. All the beach (and pool) chairs were reserved very early in the morning. Beach boys were annoying but easy to ignore.

Hotel grounds: Very nice exterior, bar and reception area, beautiful gardens and big pools. However, in some areas you could find cheap white plastic chairs which were totally out of place and ruined overall good impression.

Rooms: Clean room, big balcony, really old and lumpy mattress, tiles on the floor, antique TV set with bad reception, cheap-looking bathroom with leaky toilet (which was quickly taken care of)

Food: not bad, but definitely not amazing. Buffet dinner in main restaurant had its moments: freshly baked naan was exceptional and there was lot of choice. But buffet food is buffet food: you can stuff your face but your soul remains hungry. I really missed a la cart. Italian restaurant was below average and considering how many Italians are spending their time in this hotel, I was surprised that it was not burnt down yet;) Grill was good, no complaints there, good food, nice setting. No decent bread (except those naans), pastry, tea or coffee anywhere.

Staff: friendly, maybe too friendly for our Nordic taste. For me it is annoying to be asked dozens of times a day how am I and if everything is OK. We stayed during Valentine and we were constantly asked about our plans for that day - they were trying to sell romantic Valentine's dinner in the beach.

Entertainment and animation: Next time I'd probably choose a hotel without those. If you like to be treated and herded like little children, this is place for you. If you like to just relax by the pool or beach, you might want to look for another hotel with less organized screaming and noise. During the beach walk, we were shown a hotel where, to animation team amazement "people do nothing but read and relax by the pool". I remembered that place for my next holiday in Kenya;)

Verdict: I do not regret that I chose this hotel but I would not return.

Room Tip: Rooms closer to reception are further from entertainment.

Absolutely loved this resort and would go back again and again if I had the chance. All the staff at Southern Palms couldn't do enough for you. Jackson at the Buriti Snack Bar made us feel so welcome and taught us a bit of Swahili. We went back every day to say hello or Jambo as they say.

The food was amazing also, such a variation every day. Our favourite meals of the trip have to be those we had at the grill. The meat was delicious and the cooked pineapple complimented the dinner so well.

The pool was lovely, not too cold but cool enough to help in the midday sun. Only recommendation is do not wear white. They use a lot of chlorine to keep the pools clean and can turn anything white green. The main pool was for those into water volleyball or aerobics as they did this a few times a day but if you are not into all of that and would rather just relax there is a second pool which was very quiet.

Everywhere was spotless, our rooms cleaned to immaculate standards and the little choccie eclair left each night was a lovely touch.

We had little monkeys invade the resort every afternoon without fail. They were cute little things and very funny to watch. We also spotted a few colobus monkey on occasion who were very photo-genic.

The safari we went on at Tsavo was great, saw many animals especially elephants. Was fantastic experience. Only complaint would be the roads, not so much a complaint as an experience in itself. Very bumpy and would recommend and sports bra for any women out there. :-)

What can I say about the weather...apparently we had 2 nights of rain but we were asleep before that hit us. Other than that it was perfect sunshine our whole holiday.

I can't big this place up enough. It was such a lovely place to stay and cannot wait to return.
