“The best in Santiniketan needs to get better.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2011

Me and a friend had booked a two nights package in this resort for 13th & 14th Aug. We travelled in a group of two couples each with their daughters and mothers. After a thoroughly pleasant journey by Royal Cruiser Volvo bus from Kolkata to Burdwan and onward by a car we reached the resort around noon. The location is a bit secluded but saved us from the din of the tourists flocking the town on an extended weekend.
The outward appearance of the resort raised our enthusiasm but a short walk down the corridors from the reception to our rooms greeted us with a sense of disappointment. The rooms were cramped and ill lit. The bed & toilet linen were not too clean. The window panes did not close properly and the plenty of well fed mosquitoes and lizards were not too happy with our intrusion which led them on a mission against us with vengeance. The temperature of the air conditioners could not be controlled and the miniature television sets hardly functioned.
The telephones in our rooms were not functioning properly and ordering for tea from room service was a challenge. Even the water sent in the tea pots were cold. The first half an hour left us a bit sad for having selected this resort.
But our mood started lifting once we reached the restaurant. Starting from the decor to the staff , everything was impressive. The buffet spread was a real "treat". The array of items was amazing and the food was simply excellent. Honestly we retreated to our rooms having already erased most of the initial disappointment. In fact the meals thereon including breakfast , lunch and dinner were simply superb. The Chinese menu might need to get a facelift though but that was a negligible point.
A tour of the sprawling property post a sumptuous meal is highly recommended as it is a pleasure to check out the lawns and the water bodies in and around the property. The swimming pool is large but was not usable since the water had not been drained out for a few weeks it seemed . This was taken care off on the very first day of our arrival but was still not usable owing to the plethora of floating insects and vegetation. This could partly be owing to the monsoon season. Other travellers might have seen it in better days.
To sum it up our collective feeling is that the property needs much more attention on overall maintenance . Staff is very friendly and I am reiterating that the food is simply excellent. A bit of attention on maintenance and room decor is all that is required along with a relook at the pricing which currently makes one feel it is not exactly a value proposition.

Room Tip: Insist on the newly refurbished rooms.

The hotel, or the resort, as the owners like to call it, is situated on the main road as one enters Bolpur, hence it is slightly distant from the bustle of the town. However, the first impression, as one enters the premises, is one of decay. The property covers a biggish area, and the lawns are, quite surprisingly, fairly well kept, but as one enters the rooms, the vision of neglect is apparent. The rooms are not well maintained, and the bathrooms are full of rust and hard water stains, apart from being very poorly lit. There are open corridors leading to the rooms, which are also not well kept. There are landscaped gardens, which are also unkempt and neglected. The dining room is spartan, but the food is acceptable, and probably the only positive feature about the premises, apart from the well kept lawns (which is truly amazing, considering that the rest of the property is so rundown). The place is used by medium sized companies for holding conferences, so it isn't as if there is no revenue. If properly looked after, and well maintained, it would not be bad place to stay in, but in the present condition, it is truly depressing.

mark meadows is located just as you enter shantiniketan. the entrance is very charming with a small drive way. the rooms are decently sized and well accomodated. it has airconditioning which is extremely important as we went in peak summer. the swimming pool however was not functioning. the food is quite good and the service is decent. the biggest problem we faced was that just outside the room since there is a light there was a swarm of incests and everytime you would open the door to get in or out a few would enter. you literally had to run.the best time to visit though would be winter. they have a nice lawn where it would be nice to sit during the winter months.all in all nothing fancy i would say but for a place like shantiniketan its a good property

I have a habit of running away from Delhi during Holi festival and Shantiniketan was the place on my mind for this Holi. Mark & Meadows was recommended by a friend from Kolkata who is a frequent visitor to this place. He arranged the bookings on our behalf. We landed at Kolkata airport precisely at 9am on 19th March and headed straight for Shantiniketan. We reached there at 12 PM and I cursed my stars because all the Holi (Dol)functions at Viswa Bharti University were over by 11.30am. Totally exhausted and disappointed we came and checked in at Mark & Meadows. Location of the resort is very good. Reception is lousy. Rooms are good. Food is good ( specially Bengali food), Green surroundings and landscaping is beautiful. Swimming Pool requires a lot of attention it was dirty. Overall we enjoyed our stay and wish to return their during next Holi season

The staff, who make or mar an organisations reputation were well behaved but the overall outlook seemed very lackadiasical! the food seemed to cater to just the vegetarian community of northern india. a real shame, that in place like shantiniketan, bengali culture and cuisine is given such treatment.i will never recommend this place to people who plan to come here.
