“A Room with a View”
Reviewed 21 February 2015 for a stay in February 2015

Artful choices in color and furnishings welcome you to the well designed Casa Cactus. Every space invites with comfort, views and natural aromatherapy from the desert surrounding the property: the lower courtyard open to the stars, its shuttered windows framing trees and shrubs in daylight hours. The upstairs suite...rugged granite mountain, Sea of Cortez and desert, desert, desert. Sunrise, sunset.Japanese lanterns and solar lights brightening the garden outside the walls. The house has good utensils for cooking. It's very peaceful and yet has a gentle up and down road to the village below that brings guests to excellent restaurants like Nancy's or to the town beaches in less than ten minutes. In the tiny village, Nomad is an inviting shop with a particularly stylish line of Tshirts, made in Mexico and herbal soaps and lotions from a nearby rancho.

“Ten days in paradise”

The casita was fabulous - beautiful decorations and furniture from Mexico and Bali. The colors of walls and upholstery bright and inviting. The beds super comfy and linens of high quality. Cheryl's attention to detail was impeccable.

The upper balcony was our favorite hang out. We had a panoramic view of the Sea of Cortez, gorgeous desert mountains, cactus in the arroyo, and close up bird and iguana watching as they perched on the giant cactus nearby. The covered deck always had a cool breeze which created the perfect setting for reading, napping, chatting, munching, and drinking of our homemade margaritas! From here we listened to the birds, the whinnies of horses, and only the occasional voices from other casitas in the distance.

On the ground floor we had our own private open-air kitchen, and dinning area. We liked to make our own breakfasts and lunches, and then visit one of the six restaurants in town for dinner. On Cheryl's suggestion we stopped at the large super market for our food supplies which was near the airport in Cabo San Lucus. We also had fun visiting the organic veggie stand and the fresh fish vendor who each come to the area once a week and sell out of the back of their pick-up trucks. Believe me, we had plenty of yummy meals!

In the cool of the early morning we liked to take walks on the beach (5 mins away) or up into the dessert mountain foothills. It was so quiet and peaceful. Since the town only has about 200 year-round residents and sits adjacent to the only national marine park on the Sea of Cortez, it's a peaceful place. We also booked a snorkel trip, whale watching trip, and went horse back riding in the hills. We saw others enjoying scuba diving and mountain biking. We also swam in the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez, and snorkeled off the beach in the local reefs (Cheryl had the gear to borrow).

Cheryl was the "hostess with the mostest". She shared helpful tips and recommendations. If we needed something extra she was quick to find it for us, and even picked up a few extra groceries for us when she headed to a larger town. She told us that crime was nil so we felt 100% safe not locking doors (she doesn't either in her casita next door), but she was kind enough to provide private safes for money and jewelry. The local tap water was safe to drink, but she also provided 5-gal containers of bottled water which was great.

In reflecting on our 10 days, we had the best vacation ever! True, we did a lot of activities but mostly we relaxed, slowed down our typical American pace, enjoyed the fabulous flora and fauna, ate delicious local foods, and felt totally pampered by Cheryl and the environment of Casa Cactus! We will definitely be going back!

Liked best: From the upper balcony: views of the Sea of Cortez and the dessert mountains; watching and listening to the multitude of birds; sipping margaritas; and reading a good book.
Liked least: The fact that we couldn't stay longer!
