“shower when the water's hot”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 October 2010

We (58 & 63) stayed 2 nights mid October and were pleasantly surprised. centrally located so you don't have to depend on their restaurant - but which actually gave us a very good 'surprise' set meal for £6 each incl beer.

Clean, spacious, room, pleasant enough staff - but don't expect anyone to have more than 'hospitality' English.

The only down side is that the hot water is solar heated - good - but is hot late eveing but not in the morning - and they didn't make this clear to us (but is in Guidebooks). we found this often to eb the case in Tibet.

Our message to anyone hotelling in Tibet is "if the water's hot - shower right away"!

A very chinese-style "palace", oversized lobby with a gun in front of a hugue picture of the potala palace. There are also hourly room rates indicated, obviously for the local people in power. The water pression in our room at the top floor didn't work: the toilet overboarded and we had to change room. The food is fat and oily. (Almost) nobody understands english. We recommend to choose not this oversized, imposing place but a local small tibetan hotel instead.

This nice Chinese four-star hotel is reputedly the best in Tsetang, and we saw nothing to doubt it during our brief overnight stay. Good-sized, clean rooms with free wired Internet (that stopped working during the night). Firm but comfortable bed. Majestic lobby and public rooms. English was almost nonexistent among the staff.

Occupancy was low, so there was no buffet breakfast. Instead, we got eight or nine small plates of baked goods and cheese on our table. But a request for eggs
brought a hot tasty portion of scrambled with scallions.

We had a nice Chinese dinner in the hotel right across the street.

We stayed in 4 hotels and a tent in our 2+ weeks in Tibet and this hotel came in 1st in terms of comfort over them all with only a slight edge over the tent. So take the title of this review as a relative scale. The room was nice with a clean and serviceable bathroom. We also had a portable heating unit dropped off to warm up the room. The beds are so hard it is really difficult to prepare yourself until you experience it. The meals we had were good with a nice variety of Tibetan and Chinese for breakfast and dinner. We weren't here for long but one night was comfortable enough.

  • Liked — The overall quality of the room

As this hotel was part of the now obligatory tour package, I am not
sure of the cost, so cannot comment fairly on its value.
The hotel seems to have been completely renovated.
Lights are very dim in room, except in bathroom. Had to have a heater brought to room as it only seemed to have central a/c???
Breakfast(western) was terrible.
Staff friendly enough. Surprisingly the TV had BBC...

  • Liked — quiet
  • Disliked — poor lighting for reading
