“Consider carefully, for reasons both positive and negative.”
Reviewed 26 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

If you are hermitic in disposition, this place is ideal. The height attained via the drive affords you stunning views and a genuine sense of isolation. There is a simple beauty about the cottage and its location, tucked away in an olive grove and on a crossroad for some of Italy's most remote walking paths. If you stock up on provisions, bring books and enjoy The Great Italian Outdoors you will be in a place of bliss.
There is a significant trade-off. Getting to the property requires nerves of steel. An unmade track makes for ten minutes of steady ascent in first gear in a small car. Larger cars would be little help for the final section down to the property, where the track is very narrow in parts. There are plenty of local churches in which to offer prayers so that you do not meet another vehicle on the single lane track. Given this, there is no sense of 'popping into town'. Once you're out, you're out for the day. Also, high summer seems to mean high insect count. Our first week saw us relocated, via the very helpful agent for the property (Terry) to another villa, due to an apparent infestation of hornets. We saw none on our week at Serena; however, horseflies had taken their place and eating al fresco/ swimming in the pool was impossible for two days.
In all, this did not make for a stress-free, serene second week.

“A word of Caution”
Reviewed 17 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

A word of caution about this property.

We booked this property in May 2015 for a holiday in August 2015.

Upon arrival at the preset meeting place we were told by the agent, Terry Betts, that there was a problem with the property namely a hornets nest and that it would not be usable.

The first alternative we were offered was totally unsuitable. We were a party of four adults, a toddler and two large dogs and had wanted somewhere remote, quiet and away from it all and the alternative was a villa a quarter detached, on a busy road and with noisy neighbours. It had a swimming pool but there the similarity ended.

After much complaining we were moved to a third property which was just about acceptable. We had use of the above pool but this involved a 20 minute car drive each way to use it.

However, not being the trusting sort, we visited Casa Serena, and far from a lot of hornets we found two charming people from Hanover. Clearly there had been a double-booking and the owner had kicked us out. The agent and the owner clearly do not communicate.

So the moral of this tale is do not trust anything you are told by the agent Terry Betts or by the owner who incidentally did not even have the grace to apologise to us.

“A nice villa in an utterly fabulous location”
Reviewed 30 December 2014 for a stay in September 2014

Casa Serena isn't luxurious, but the location is superb, the pool lovely, and Terry who welcomed us (and runs a B&B in the same valley) was unfailingly helpful.
The villa is up a long, steep and sometimes rough track (but fine in our rented Fiat 500, not rough enough to need a 4x4), so going out to a restaurant or shop isn't trivial. The views, right down the valley to Castiglion Fiorentino, are spectacular and the location great for hiking as well as lounging by the pool.
Highly recommended for lovers of seclusion.

“Great for summer, not so great in the colder months”
Reviewed 9 November 2014 for a stay in October 2014

Casa Serena has two bedrooms and sleeps 4 in a double and two single beds. The location is fantastic, being high up in the hills and very secluded and quite. It has great views over the valley to the west. It has a very good little private swimming pool which is 10 yards from the house, and would be wonderful for young children in the summer. However, we had a number of frustrating issues during our stay. We stayed there in Oct 2014, and the evenings were getting cold, so we needed the central heating. However, the central heating didn’t work properly throughout our stay there, despite several attempts by the owners to rectify it. We also lost all water supply on one day, which took two visits by maintenance men to solve, and we lost hot water on one occasion, which required yet another call-out to the owners. The property is advertised as having a wood-burning fire, which is true, however no firewood is provided and we could find no firewood on sale in any of the supermarkets in Castiglion Fiorentino. We did manage to find some firewood ourselves in the olive groves. The fireplace is a large open fireplace typical of old farmhouses, and when the wind is blowing from the wrong direction, the house fills with smoke, so we only attempted a fire on one evening, and to clear the smoke we had to sit with all the doors and windows open. The television system also needs modernising: it’s a very old analogue television using a digi-box, and no instructions for its use are provided. We would recommend Casa Serena for the hot summer months, but we feel, based on our experience, it is best avoided in the winter.

“The perfect Tuscan holiday”
Reviewed 23 June 2013 for a stay in June 2013

We stayed at Casa Serena for a week and couldn't have asked for a better location for our first family holiday with our one-year-old son. The villa is located in a completely private setting with a beautiful pool and simple but elegant furnishings. Everything we needed was provided - the owner even purchased a lovely new cot and bedding when we informed them we were bringing our son. The local area has plenty of things to see and do and there are many places to visit within a short drive (a car is essential). We are experienced travellers and have stayed in many different places and we would rate Casa Serena as one of the best places we have had the pleasure to visit. A return trip is already being planned.
