We stayed at Heng Heng Guesthouse for 2 nights, our main reason for visiting Kratie was to see the freshwater dolphins. As there isn't a great deal else in the town, we thought we would spend $15 (which is quite a lot for this town) and stay somewhere nice.
Initially the room seemed quite nice, they are fairly spacious and you get aircon, hot shower and cable TV. After we checked in and paid for 2nights, one of the staff told us, that we cant actually use the aircon or TV because the hotel runs off a generator during the daytime & it isn't powerful enough. They also couldn't confirm what times the power would be on - which was pretty annoying.
The next annoyance with this hotel is the fact that in the evening, the place is covered in bugs - not just the foyer area - our room and bed was swarmed with all kinds of bugs. We reported it to reception & their answer to this was just to brush the bugs off the bed onto the floor. This didn't really seem to solve the problem. After a bit more complaining, they used insecticide around the room and brushed some of the insects into the hallway.
It seemed that the Kratie as a whole had a lot of bugs, you definitely need DEET.
For some unknown reason, even though we had had a few problems with the hotel, we gave them the benefit of the doubt and decided to get our laundry done. After travelling South East Asia for 3 months and getting our laundry done on a weekly basis, we have not had any problems. Heng Heng charge $1.5 per kilo for laundry which is about double the other prices we had paid in Cambodia. On returning the laundry, a few items where still wet and 3 others had pink stains across them. When I complained to the staff about this, they just laughed and said we need to separate our laundry better.
We ate in the restaurant during our stay, the food is OK - nothing to write home about so I'm unsure of why it is featured in the Lonely Planet.
From what I have wrote, it is pretty obvious that I don't recommend this hotel. There are a few other options located near the riverfront, if you are looking for somewhere budget, then the side streets off the riverfront (away from the market) seem cheaper.
Anyway, after all that complaining, I have to say that seeing the freshwater dolphins was amazing - we saw quite a few in the 30 mins we spent on the river so the visit to Kratie was well worth it. I would just stay somewhere else if I had the time again.
