Last week we took our kids (aged 10 and 7) to stay in Lake Yurt for two nights. We only wish it had been longer! It was an absolutely fantastic place, utterly beautiful and a true getaway - and we'd definitely like to go back.
The first wonderful thing you encounter is the welcome. Wendy and Larry, the owners, are absolutely lovely and couldn't have been more helpful or more keen to see that we had everything we needed. You leave your car by the farmhouse, and Larry drives your bags (and you, if you like) down to the yurt by tractor & trailer. The kids absolutely loved this!
Lake Yurt itself stands in woodland, all by itself, with a little lake (not deep) beside it. I just couldn't believe that we had so much space all to ourselves - the wood, the lake, the little stream, our lovely kitchen/dining hut, the shower hut and loo were all just for us. You truly do have wonderful privacy here. As a peaceful getaway it is absolutely ideal, and for the kids it was 'nature heaven'! They spent lots of time on the water, rowing each other (or one of us) about in the little dinghy. When they weren't doing that they played hide and seek in the woodland, or went to see the horses in a nearby field.
The facilities are great - everything is well set up, clean and thoughtfully arranged. The stove in the yurt itself is brilliantly efficient - though the evenings were cold, the stove made the yurt toasty warm and we were very comfortable.
All in all, this was a brilliant place. We have camped before, but never stayed in a yurt. Now we have fallen in love with this one, and are just wondering how soon we can return... but for longer next time!

My husband and I stayed in Lake Yurt towards the end of last summer and it was an absolutely amazing few days. We live in Bristol and when we got to the yurt all the stresses of everyday life just fell away; which was exactly what we needed! It's truly beautiful there - you are literally surrounded by nature - and just so relaxing and peaceful. We cooked dinners outside, went for lovely walks on the moors, had pub lunches and visited Ashburton where we had a wander round the little antiques shops (you can get a good bargain if you look hard enough!)
The yurt itself was comfortable and cosy, especially when we got the log burner going in the evening and a nice double bed! We love camping but this made such a lovely change as we had everything we needed while still being free from electricity etc and able to properly chill out. Wendy and Larry were fantastic hosts, very helpful, and made us feel really welcome and they have a gorgeous dog, Paddy! We have a baby on the way now and will definitely return with our child in the near future to create more lovely memories with them!
There are few more romantic places to spend a few days than in one of Wendy and Larry's beautiful yurts. Our favourite is Sunshine, as it sits alone in a lovely meadow with a stream running along the side. Wendy and Larry are helpful, friendly and wonderful but once you get to your yurt you don't have to see another human being unless you want to, and you can entirely abandon your car in favour of wandering across the moors, down to the River Dart (where wild swimming is a truly special experience) or to one of many picture perfect villages in the area.
The yurts themselves are extremely comfortable. The gorgeous luxury of the woodburner on a chilly night will make you long for bad weather and everything is designed to add to a relaxing, peaceful escape.
Pretty much the highest compliment we can bestow on this magical place is that we're heading back there for our honeymoon this year! We can't think of anywhere more idyllic to spend our first few days of married life.
