Wife and I met friends for dinner and stayed in December 2016, and I returned with my son to have dinner recently. Very nice. Our Swedish friends think highly of it.
This is a famous landmark hotel located above the second largest lake in Europe making for fabulous views. Interestingly, not built on the remains of an old castle, it is a hotel built in 1930s I think to look like a castle turned hotel (explained by a local; builder may have been in royal family). Truely adds old world ambience and charm reminiscent of a royal hunting lodge. We stayed in the annex, which was accommodating enough with fantastic views, but was nothing special, except for the view. You pay $$$ for the name. But the main building was really neat with dark wood, period furniture, salon and terrace overlooking he lake. Dinner was outstanding although very pricey. This place is a must see. Romantic too.

This is my second time staying at this hotel and as I remembered from first time the views over Vättern (a lake) is beautiful. There is 2 parts of this hotell. The old main building which is very charming and castle like and a newer building little further away from the main building which is nothing special but ok for a quick overnight.
Quite expensive for what you get but it has its charm.
Think the last stay is the last one for me, there is more bang for the buck in the vicinity.

The location of this hotel is great. Close to the road, easy to find, plenty of parking, close to the famous town Gränna. The check in time was 3 pm but room was not ready until 30 min later. Our room was in another building on first floor, second floor has a great view. The dinner we had in the restaurant was a disappointment as the service. My suggestion is make a stop have a coffee and enjoy the view. Then continue the trip.

Gyllene Uttern is somehow a Swedish institution. Perhaps because everyone and anyone that has driven through Sweden will know where it is. The buildings have been built and re-built over many years and at the moment the main building has a very cosy old style feel to it. The former terrace has been glassed in and now constitutes a dining room. Style wise not really in keeping with the remainder of the building but we forgive them for that as it is clearly more useful to have indoor dining than outdoor dining in Sweden. And the view is fantastic.
The sleeping quarters are in a newer less charming building and are really nothing special.
Dinner was nice and assume breakfast is good too (I had to leave too early to know).
If you stay here, do it for the views and to know that you have been there :-)
