“The Old Girl Ain't What She Use To Be”

. . .but she is still graceful. Nilambagh Palace provides a very graceful foyer lounge. The courtyard is a treasure, though when we were there there was no water in the fountain or display pond.
Set back from a busy road, the large rooms with high ceilings are relatively quiet. Air con and ceiling fan provided but wi-fi or Internet is not available. All rooms open on to a large, shaded verandah, some of which have seat swings. Unfortunately, the charm of the verandahs is often shattered by the loud noise of old air cons whirring away.
The rooms are equipped with old furniture: we didn't mind this as it added to a pleasing dated feeling of the former palace. I wouldn't call it Raj, more like early Independence.
The inside dining hall was pleasant enough though the food pedestrian. However, the evening Garden Restaurant served a tasty and more local style that attracted a number of local diners (at least on the veg side; non-veg is segregated and fair enough too!).
Dare I say that a maintenance program would be a good idea but it seems to be an Indian norm to let buildings run into the ground.
Overall, I'd give the N Palace a 3 1/2 and recommend a stay if in the area.

Sure, it has a grand history, and the period architecture of the building is impressive. The rooms are typically very spacious (bet 40-50m2) but very much out dated fittings/furnishings. The bed was just alright, as I managed to get a good night's rest. The bathroom is a distinct 50 years behind time, archaic. The a/c was old box type, very noisy, blasting cold air right to my direction - needed to turn it off at night.Interior of the building was 'stale' - trying to replicate the graceful of it's heritage, but poorly maintained. Food was acceptable.

Hi, I stayed at this hotel alst month for two nights and it was a pleasant experience. The rooms were oversized and with high roofs. The typical classical Raj type hotel with the staff to match. I cannot say that it had the best service at the main hotel or the F&B, however the rooms were comfortable and surprisingly the food at their restaurant was excellent. I initially had the ground floor room but the keys would not work so got the thrid floor and was very happy with it as it had its own terrace. Always ask for a higher floor and in the main building as the anexe is not worth it. I think it even has another name. All in all a good location and good food. A blast from the past when having afternoon tea in its huge service hall with the "Bearers". Breakfast was no great shakes and simple a'la carte.

Room Tip: Ask for the main building and higher floor to be away from the noise if you land up on a weekend and...

The hotel remodelled from a palace of yesteryears is quite a revelation with the service. Located in the heart of Bhavnagar, it is quite close to all the major bus stations and the airport. The place has the old-age rustic charm that you would associate with a palace hotel. Large rooms, a lift installed in 1912, open verandhas, walls and ceilings made from stones, bathrooms which are the same size of a standard room, huge windows in a bathroom opening into a verandah - are all features which look like a Sanjay Bhansali movie set. Overall a good experience.

Room Tip: Should ideally be the first choice in Bhavnagar, since it is centrally located
