We stayed at the Jaipur House for 3 nights from Dec. 31, 08 - Jan. 3rd, 09. The hotel is in a beautiful location up on a hill over looking the lake Nikki and the town below. It is the typical old mansion-palace of India, you can tell that there was a time of grandiosity and opulence, but those days are long gone. We stayed in the “Maharaja Suite" for the first 2 nights. It was very spacious and awkwardly designed, not what one would expect from its title. Nevertheless, we had a very comfortable stay. The “Maharaja Suite” comes with cable TV, hot water and possibly the most comfortable bed we slept on in our 20 days in India. Also, it opens to an enormous beautiful terrace with a great view! The hotel staff is super friendly and helpful. The last night we were moved to a smaller, dark room, I think this part of the hotel used to be the “servants’ quarters”. The bed was comfortable, we had TV and hot water, but it was very dark and a bit depressing.

We arrive on Dec. 31st and the hotel had a party for New Years Eve (no extra cost), the celebration took place out in the lower level terrace, we could see the lake and the town for there too, it was a bit cold, but they had three small bonfires which was very nice and romantic. Near midnight they started to play Bollywood music, I had much fun watching the locals dancing, it was just like in the Bollywood movies! There was also an improvised bar and a BBQ, the barman made wonderful gin and tonics! We didn’t try the BBQ as we were vegetarians during our visit to India. At midnight there were fire works coming from every direction from the town below and the lake, a really nice New Years’ Eve, we even forgot that we were sick!

Talking of which, unfortunately, we arrived in Mt. Abu from Udaipur a little bit ill, I am convinced that the culprit was a walnut tart that I ate from a small bakery across the street from our hotel in Udaipur. First it was just me with headaches, nausea and body aches, it felt like the flu, then my husband started feeling ill too, except that in his case, his intestines got possessed by an evil spirit and he couldn’t go too far from the toilet. It was nothing serious though, we had antibiotics and Imodium with us, it lasted less than 24 hours, so it was nothing to panic about, it is all part of the India experience, hahahaha! Since Mt. Abu is a very quiet town, it was the "perfect place" to be sick. We spent two days in bed in the Maharaja Suite, ordering room service and watching TV. The room service was prompt, always right, and delivered by a nice Indian man with a big-long curled mustache, a bright red turban and a big smile!

The food was nothing to brag about, we found this to be the case in most places, but that's OK, we live in NYC and we have plenty of nice restaurants there.

The hotel may look far from town, but the true is that the lake and "the town" are just 15 minutes walk. One afternoon we walked to the lake and rented a little paddling-boat, which was good fun, we were the only "westerners" in the lake and people where racing each other in their little boats to come and say "hi" to us. Very friendly town!

Mount Abu was meant to be quiet 'break' within our 3 week schedule, but it wasn't to be! The whole place was buzzing in the 2 days we were there towards the end of December. The hotel is located high up and the view of Lake Nakki is stunning.
It is a Heritage site with reasonable rooms. (Not exceptional, but compared to what we could make out of the other hotels, this seemed good!). Our package included Breakfast and Dinner. Selection I must say was very limited. Staff were trying to be attentive and helpful.
Our overall summary of this hotel is that it is a reasonable hotel considering the location.
