“Prodigious detail but artistically sterile”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 March 2012

This was my third visit to the temples at Dilwara and as usual I tried to convince myself I was contemplating a masterpiece. I wasn't. There is a heap of prodigiously carved detail here, but there is nothing of beauty.

I don't want to spoil anyone's fun, but having read the dozens of rave (and quite uncritical) reviews, I think it is time for a sober word. I perhaps see things differently because sculpture is my business. I recognize that these temples represent a colossal effort. Indeed, the signboards tell the visitor how many hundreds of masons worked for how many thousands of days. I don't doubt they did. I only say it's a pity they didn't have better taste or an overall artistic concept. Sheer labour doesn't of itself produce art and beauty - and Dilwara is a good demonstration of that principle.

This is one of the most photographed sites in India - and detail shots certainly make good photos for coffee table books. But when you stand back and examine the architecture and the overall form, what you see is an assemblage of squat columns, dumpy domes, and fat lintels - all overlaid with a filigree of finely-carved detail in a hope that the clumsiness can be disguised. The human forms are not so much erotic as distorted. The carving is not well proportioned, it is simply obsessive and repetitive.

The Jain temples at Jaisalmer and Ranakpur are far more artistically successful. And you would avoid the appalling crowd control at Dilwara.

“Very Good Architecture...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 March 2012

The architecture of this temple is worth visiting. Its very vast and very exquisite. Took us some time to enter the temple as there was lot of rush, but overall the visit was well worth the time. It located around 15 mins from the Nakki lake and a must see place in Mount Abu.
