Just returned from a fortnights holidays at the Marni Village in Koutouloufari, Crete. Had a great holiday but have to be honest in saying disappointed after reading reviews before we went.
We requested a quiet room as we use the balcony a lot and like to remain private. Unfortunately on arrival we were allocated 2 superior studios right opposite the reception on the access road into the Marni Village. No privacy whatsoever! Everyone coming and going passed by us. Taxis turned round outside the reception day and night so this was right outside the studios. This combined with the noise from Quad bikes and scooters all day and most of the night, along with the noise from any new arrivals dragging their cases past out doors made the location from our point of view certainly not the best. When we complained we were told nothing else was available but we would receive our money back if we wanted to move out! Just what you need when you arrive on holiday in the height of season! We didn't find the reception staff friendly at all, probably due to the fact we had complained.
We also found that there were groups of youngsters, mainly lads in their 20's, are now using this property and they did tend to dominate the pool and create lots of noise on an evening. It seems to be moving away from the family theme!
Sunbeds do need replacing and shortage of sunbeds and umbrellas was an issue unless you were about at 8-8:30 to reserve some!
We were surprised how few English people were staying whilst we were there. Certainly no one for our 2 teenage Daughters to mix with. This appeared to be the same even in Hersonisos. Mainly Irish and Dutch.
Koutouloufari is a fabulous place and eating out a delight. Galini's is a must and the Roustico nearly as good. Nice place to have a relaxing drink later on is Vinnies. Whole village delightful with everything you could want apart from Nightclubs.
These are however an abundance in Hersonisos along with cocktail bars galore.
All in all Marni Village not one of our favourite places but would recommend it if stopping in the new part as much nicer up there (if you don't mind hills). Whole area is very hilly so not for the unfit, infirm, or disabled! Does however keep you fit especially the walk to Hersonisos and back!!
Will definately return to Koutouloufari but not sure about the Marni Village!

We returned yesterday from a 2 week family holiday in Marni. This was our second time there and we're already looking forward to spending our summer break there again next year. The staff are very friendly. Our apartment looked out to the sea and to the side of our balcony we overlook the original pool. Marni now has 3 pools as Marni village has expanded over the years. Our apartment was cleaned, bed linen and towels changed every 2 days. The cleaning staff used to arrange my daughter's soft toys on her bed, which we thought was quite nice. The only criticism would be the showers. The shower curtain is short of the shower tray so there is NO way of avoiding wetting the bathroom floor. Also the shower heads could do with being replaced. Our apartment is one of the originals, so very basic but clean. As you climb up through Marni village, the apartments/villas get newer, but there is some climb.
We prefer the pool near our apartment as the area is quiet, but the sun loungers have seen better days and should also be replaced. These are minor complaints. No matter what time of the morning people came down for a lounger, there would be ones available. I'm an early riser, so was always up and out by 8.30 reading. As Marni is more of a family and couple destination, it certainly is not suitable for the 18-30's groups of girls or fellas. The families are very intolerant of the noise created by these youngsters and there are signs up requesting silence after 12 mn.
The local supermarket and bakery are run by Jean from UK and her Greek husband. The croissants and breads are delicious and we used to order them the night before so we wouldn't be dissapointed. Marni is a couple of minutes walk from the village of Koutouloufari which leads into the next village of Piskopiano and then into the village of Old Hersonnisos. There are any number of tavernas and restaurants to choose from. Our favourite was 'Rahati,' a pancake place run by Ben. He does the best apple and cinnamon pancake in the world. If you want a romantic meal, go for the chocolate fondue! We ate there many times and had our breakfast there on the morning of our return flight. 'Gallini' restaurant is great. Looks posh, but great service, food, and staff and very resonable prices. We found during both our stays, that the quality of the food is very hit and miss, except in 'Rahati'. You could have a great meal in a particular restaurant one night and be very dissapointed on your next visit to the same place.
Hersonnisos is a downhill walk of 10 mins. Take the 1st turn right after the Sports Bar. There are plenty of restaurants along by the sea, and plenty of hustle and bustle but it was always good to get back to Koutouloufari. The walk back up the steep hill takes about 15-20 mins. A taxi costs 6 euro. Car hire is a good idea if you want to see some of the island. You need to shop around for the best deals. 'Full insurance' doesn't mean fully comprehensive. Once you've handed over your deposit and are guaranteed fully insured, when you go to collect your car, they'll tell you theft is not included and look for extra money. The best car hire place was on the hill down towards Hersonnisos.

Marni Village proved a great base for our family holiday. We mixed lazy days by one of the three pools with trips around the island and were blown away with the friendliness of the resort staff and the people of Crete in general. All the accomodation was clean and tidy; although we'd recommend the larger more recent rooms if you want a spacious environment with the best sea views.

There are too many good restaurants in easy walking distance to mention, you could easily eat out at a different place each night and never have a bad meal.

Car hire for at least part of your holiday is recommended; there's so much to see on the island and two weeks wasn't enough for us.

We'll be back and very probably back at Marni.

Went to Marni Village on the 25th of May 07 for one week. The apartments were very clean but toilets were very very basic, my friend was put off by this, i have been to Crete three times before and they were like this in the apartments i have stayed in, so dont let that put you off. The gardens and pools are well kept, we had a view of one of the smaller pools and the ocean really nice in the evenings to come back and sit out on the balcony and relax. The food at the pool bar is really nice and cheap and if you can, try attend the weekly bbq's at marni a great night guaranteed. There is a shop just beside the entrance which is so handy. All the shops and bars are within walking distance. Food in Crete is fantastic and the people are brill. Went into Hersonissos couple of nights had a great time. Beware of Mosquitos the nasty things really like to bite, i had to attend the medical centre for three mornings. Also your e111 card does not work in the mediacl centre in Hersonissos only your insurance will cover the cost. Bring pleanty of money if your planning to do alot of shopping most things are really cheap but clothes and shoes can be little expensive. In all would recommend Marni Village and Crete as one of the best holidays. Love crete so much i have booked crete for 2 weeks in July .

We have just returned from a week in Marni Village. We are a couple, 25 and 30 years of age and found Marni an excellent place to stay. There were plenty of couples around aswell as families which makes Marni a perfect location for anyone, any age. The pool area was very clean and there were plenty of sunloungers to chose from. we even got up one morning at 12pm (after a late night in Hersonnissos) and were still able to get ourselves sunbeds. Yes the towels were placed on them in the morning but there was always plenty to go round.

The staff were very friendly and welcoming and there was always a fiendly face at the pool bar area when we would have a cool beer by the pool or a snack when feeling peckish. Marni Village is only a 5min walk into the pretty village of Koultoulafari where you will find many restaurants to cater for your needs.A 10min walk downhill brings you to Star Beech and Hersonnissos. The walk back however is not as nice! We did this twice during the week we were there which was enough as it is steep but that was during the day in the heat! Taxis cost €6 but you could talk them down to €5, which I managed to do!

Overall I would highly recommend Marni as you feel close to the crazy nightlife in Hersonnissos while you have the privacy and quitness of the resort with a friendly atmosphere and late bar (opens til 3am) with views of mountainside and sea. The room we stayed in (studio apartment) was adequate for our needs with a double bed (not twin beds pushed together), fridge, and cooking facilities. Our balcony had lovely views also while towels and bed was changed every second day.

Finally one restaurant that we were extremely impressed with in Koutoulafari is "Galini" and well worth a visit for both food, presentation and service at resaonable cost. Just eat there and you will know what I mean!! You won't be disappointed if you visit Marni Villages
