“Great location....”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 January 2012

Entrance of KTDC, itself is good.... Long road... Green trees on both sides welcomes you. :)

We stayed here for one day. Ours was canal view room. As like other canal-view rooms, ours was not at any corner. But it was just behind lake view rooms, in the center.

Nice place... Different resort. Here greenery is natural. Not like well maintained lawns. We felt like we are in some real part of the nature.

Rooms are very spacious, clean bath rooms. No problem with A/C, phones or with TV.

Sun set view was amazing. It doesn't matters, which room you are in... Sit at edge of the lake, enjoy the beauty...
Your day will start with birds music.

In the evening , they had arranged Bharatha naatya performance.

Food:
They say its a buffet . But there is no much option. We felt it was okay okay. But not excellent . Actually it is slightly over priced. But for other good things, can compromise with this.

Things to do :
There is no much option do in KTDC. And we felt, we don't anything else. Just sit and relax. Enjoy the time.

Kumarakom is same as alappuzha. A back water place . You can go for boating on hourly bases or house boats are also available.

Bird sanctuary is situated next to KTDC. Its not a big one. As morning walk, we went there. Very few birds are there. Here trees are very tall and big. So, we were listening the birds chirping . But its tough to search the birds between that greenery. :)

Suggestions:
Here everything is there. Just need to maintain properly.

Actually lake water itself is pumped inside to make it more natural. But it is tough to maintain. Even though they have some motor to clean the water and pump inside. It stinks at some corner places. It needs continuous cleaning.

Visit once, enjoy the time

The architecture of Waterscapes is such that no matter where you are and no matter what you do, you are in a close encounter with Nature, made safe by KTDC. It was only after we left that we realised that while we were there, our worries were not with us. The cottages are comfortable, clean and well-equipped, including phones and TVs. The only improvement i could think of was to have cottages without phones and TV. Birds are aplenty, even if one only sits in the verandah. Nights were not as chilly as we expected them to be in late December: one can easily snooze in the comfortable verandah chairs.

The reception, restaurant, room service and pool staff were all efficient and helpful. Food was just about alright, with a little attention, it can be improved vastly and only then can Waterscapes hope to compete with Vythiri Resorts.

Room Tip: if you are keen on sunsets, choose the lake view. however, it does not really matter, as enchanting...

Accommodation here is in rustic cabins which are not all that comfortable. Very dark and pretty basic. The whole place has a damp feeling of mildew. The adjoining bird sanctuary is a bit of a joke as we saw more birds from the waterfront restaurant window than in the sanctuary. Food in the restaurant was just passable. Overall, I wouldn't recommend staying here. Look for something more comfortable.

The Waterscapes Kumarakom Backwater resort is on the banks of Vembanad Lake. The Lake itself stretches till the banks of Alleppey and is connected to the backwaters in and around both Kumarakom and Alleppey. One can hire a boat and cruise along the backwaters for hours. Canal brings to the eyes and senses a fresh beauty. It is a very enjoyable and relaxing cruise. The property is inside the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary.

We stayed for two nights. The rooms in the Waterscapes resort are built on stilts and each spacious room with its sit out is comfortable and boasts of a grand view. However, stay in Superior Rooms with a view of the Lake. The other rooms have an isolated feel.

There nothing much you can do in Kumarakom, but nice place to relax.

The service is adequate and the staff friendly and courteous.

Room Tip: Stay with a view of the Lake.

the waterscapes complex is a fascinating design, completely different from anything i have ever experienced. each "room" is a separate cottage, on stilts, built over a small part of the huge meenachil river delta. the room i stayed in, #201, actually had a canal running below it. in the morning, i found a white-throated kingfisher sitting just outside the window, waiting for his meal to float by.

the restaurant is also on stilts, built on the marshy land at one edge of the enormous vembunad lake and you regularly see egrets and herons fishing among the reeds at breakfast. i believe the this was part of the kumarakom bird sanctuary until the KSTDC managed to get permission to build an eco-resort here.

the service was not amazing, but quite competent. the buffet dinner had one or two nice items - but mostly humdrum. i stayed only one night and they had a flute concert in the evening the which i felt was excellent. the swimming pool is superbly located on the edge of the lake.

it's a great bicycling area, and i found some of the other resorts have cycles on rent, but this hotel doesn't. i was on a bicycle tour of kerala, and i had my cycle with me, so it wasn't a probelm for me. i would recommend cycling down from kochi via cherthala and the thanneermukkom dam over the upper vembunad - a 60km ride which will take most of the day, but you get to cross the dam down from kochi. from alleppey, you can take the ferry from muhamma to kottayam, and ride down the 4km to the resort.

compared to the resorts next-door - coconut lagoon to the north and taj vivanta to the south, which are normal well-managed resorts, this is a completely different experience. taj doesn't have rooms that face the lake. coconut lagoon is somewhat better in that respect but the rooms and layout here are superb.

navigating the dim-lit paths in the evening can be a bit of a problem. but one must realize that this resort was built to work with nature, and not against it.

the bird sanctuary itself was a disappointment. I was there in december, apparently migratory birds turn up a month later. if it's birds you are after, thattekad bird sanctuary is far richer.

Room Tip: rooms starting 1xx open onto the lake for great sunset views. the higher the number the closer you a...
