“Enchanting homestay!”
Reviewed 7 July 2012

I must admit I have seldom felt more at peace while travelling away from home. If you are looking for a place to relax while experiencing beautiful Kerala, this is great! Away from pricey 5-star resorts, this place made me feel cosy and light on my mind and pocket. The homestay and its surrounding gardens are painstakingly well maintained by its owner, Mr.Xavier. The Meenachil river (thats the name if i am right) flows a few feet in front of the house.
The homestay is a bit in the interior, off the main road, but we got there fine with good directions. We stayed in an AC cottage with a large patio, and a 'swing bed'. My 3-yr old loved the 'swing bed', and so did I! Lying on it and watching the butterflies flutter by was like swinging in little paradise. The cottage was clean, in and out. We had warm bath water, AC through the night, slept like logs.
The tender coconut water that we (family of four) were offered as we arrived, was sweet and cooled my insides. All meals cooked by Mrs.Xavier were good, warm Kerala food. She was ready to customize the menu, but I preferred to go by her choice. The home-made tamarind pickle was yummy, made with tamarind picked from their garden. They also grow papaya, coconut and jackfruit.
Mr.Xavier arranged for a canoe ride along the river and backwaters, and we saw the long snakeboat that is taken for boat racing. He arranged for a houseboat ride which took us along the backwaters and Vembanad lake.
While driving back from Kerala, my kid wanted to go back to 'Kottayam' meaning this homestay, and not go home! I loved my stay here and would definitely return and recommend.

The best places to relax need not be the most expensive ones, and Joseph's place is testimony to this. The place reminded me of my grandmothers' home. Nice, warm and friendly.
A bit far from everywhere, and you need to be guided to reach here. Our driver and he had to exchange more than a few calls and Xavier finally met us at the main road, still a few kilometres away from this place. But once you reach there, it seems to be the right place for a break. There is lovely canal just outside the hotel, and Xavier arranged a lovely trip down the canal. Also, he took us to see the "snake boat", the 50 mtr long 200 year old boat they use for the race every year in Allepey - an amazing piece.
The food was excellent, including the fresh Mango juices he made for us.
The linen is clean, the toilets are well kept, rooms are neat.
Considering that his business is going up, I will suggest him to buy a genset as there was power cut at 1 am in the night and we had no power till morning.
Despite this hiccup, I will still rate it as one of the best places I have stayed.

Room Tip: The rooms away from the home seem to be more airy.

First of all, I would like to Thank Xavier Uncle and Aunty for everything they did for us!!! You guys are amazing!!!

Awesome place for all who are planning for a family vacation and want to connect with Nature and relax, This place will make you feel that you are at your own house, however not surrounded with Traffic, Pollution and Crowd, instead a place where you can relax and check the nature( Water, Birds, Fish, Trees and much more). This is a well maintained heritage property amidst the Mango, coconut & other tree plantations. We stayed in 3 AC cottage which was overseeing the flowing backwaters. We played cards and had lot of fun….
We got a chance to talk so many family things and was a excellent experience ...Sipping hot tea sitting by the river, lazing on the swing, listening to the birds, walking around in the garden, etc created a mesmerizing effect on our senses leaving us amazed at the fact that we spent 2 days without watching T.V and forgetting to answer our phones.. Xavier uncle arrange for a closed boat which could take us to the House boat that we took the next day…. We enjoyed the little one than the House boat..
He took us to his friend's place where we saw the process of fish farming. He also showed us a huge snake boat which was taken to U.S for an exhibition. This boat is used to for racing in Allapey during the 2 Saturday of August every year are they are the champions last year. Wish they continue the same for more years….. Uncle Xavier is also the captain for the ship and will explain patiently on all the question we had….

Our kids loved his place than the other places that we visited. They were all over the place and enjoyed the stay to the fullest. Thanks again for everything that you did for us.

The breakfast, Lunch and Dinner which was traditional prepared by aunty was excellent. She is a very warm person. We also met his son, who was an extremely friendly person & shared a lot of information about the place. His daughter is a Dr in US and I guess she is visiting this place later this month, So I guess the home stay will be occupied by his family and might not be available for public. I am sure some one who are planning to get to this plave during that time will miss staying in this lovely Heritage. But please check with him… He can be reached at 0 919745286358

This place is ideal for all, as it's at a lovely location, economical and good food at extremely economical rates. However, it is located in the interiors therefore it is advisable to take a precise location details or ask the driver to directly speak to Xavier Uncle which is what we did. We reached around 11.00 PM and Uncle himself came to the main road and guided us to the place.

We would definitely want to go back to this place and spend more days.
We would like to wish Uncle & his team "ALL THE BEST" for this year as well and we hope & pray that your snake boat wins the race again this year...& if it does, we will await for a treat from you :-)

Lot's of Happiness to you, aunty & your family

Harish, Pinky and Family.

A beautiful home and garden, perfect for bird watching and for experiencing life on the backwaters. We received a very warm welcome from Xavier and his wife, whose cooking is delightful. Boat trips can be organised by Xavier on request. Both he and his wife went out of their way to make the stay as pleasant as possible. We would happily recommend this homestay.

A very nice homestay next to the river, even nicer was the hospitality. Thanks to Mr and Mrs Xavier. Loved the stay.. The surroundings were really good. We stayed for only 1 day there. I wish we had stayed longer. Xavier uncle arranged for a covered boat and a houseboat for us, which otherwise would have been very difficult for us. The breakfast was good. Everyone in our group liked it. We, 11 people visited the homestay. I would suggest to have food at the homestay itself, as the food there was good, and since we ate outside, we had a tough time finding a good place to eat. Whenever i go to Kumarakom in future, i will be staying in the same homestay. Thanks to Xavier uncle for his complementary offers and the hospitality.. :)

- Rajeev.
