We enjoyed our day with Sammy a lot! The snorkeling was superb, Sammy is a master in spotting the Manta Rays. We spotted one and snorkeled for a while with it. Truly amazing experience!

The BBQ lunch on the motu was fantastic, grilled tuna and poisson crû. Together with the coconut bread, which were made at the spot, we couldnt have asked for a better lunch! Sammy is an awesome guy, highly recommended!

A must do tour with Sammy (who speaks great English) and takes you to swim with the giant manta rays, snorkel the coral gardens, eat fresh grilled tuna, Possion cru on an idyllic beach with stingrays swimming and a magnificent view of Maupiti island. Then a stop to swim at the famous and almost deserted Tereia beach before heading back to your pension by boat.
I lead tours in French Polynesia and have also been on many throughout the islands as a seasoned visitor to French Polynesia and this was simple and a lovely way to see Maupiti at all angles from the water. And sammy was available to talk about island life but not rude or show off like some tour guides can be on Bora Bora.

Our tour guide, Sammy's father, was knowledgeable about the Mantas, where to snorkel, and LOVED to feed the Stingrays and other lagoon fish. Very entertaining and relaxing.

This was a real highlight, Sammy is an awesome local guy who is really friendly and takes you to snorkel with the Manta Rays, followed by an authentic bbq lunch by the beach on a pristine motu. The food was fantastic and included seafood salad, tuna steaks and delicious coconut bread cooked on site using Hibiscus leaves! In our case the Manta Rays were a no-show so he took us to a lovely coral garden for snorkelling, leading the way through the maze of coral bommies. If you are going to Maupiti, make sure you lock this one in your itinerary!

On a recent trip to Maupiti, we stayed at the stunningly located Maupiti Residence where we were looked after by the ever-helpful Lai. We wanted to do a lagoon tour, with all the usual attractions of manta rays, a motu picnic, and crystal clear water for snorkelling. Lai told us her boyfriend, Sammy, would take us, so off we went early next morning. There were just the four of us from Maupiti Residence's two beach bungalows, which was nice. Sammy was a great host. Very friendly and communicative, with better English than our French, and a very comfortable boat with a big awning for shade. We saw the manta rays at exactly the spot Sammy said they could be seen, and Sammy dove down with my underwater camera to get a picture that I couldn't have hoped to have got myself. As we crossed the lagoon he played his ukulele and sang. He prepared a fantastic lunch of marinated raw tuna with salad, freshly caught Mahi Mahi on the BBQ, coconut bread, and rice. While he was cooking we went off in search of a shark nursery, and found it - a shallow spit on the motu that was teeming with very curious baby sharks. After lunch we went to Maupiti's coral gardens which have the best coral I have seen in Polynesia, although covering a relatively small area of course. Sammy guided us expertly through the coral maze - essential, as the water above the coral is very shallow, so if you don't follow the deeper channels you risk nasty cuts and scrapes. The fish were plentiful and the water clear enough for some stunning photographs. In the coming weeks we would do several trips like this on different Polynesian islands and atolls, but Sammy's was the best (not to mention the least expensive at just 5,000 Pacific Francs per person including lunch and a pair of flippers - we had our own snorkels). Thanks, Sammy, for a very pleasant and memorable day.
