Well, what can we say.......It was a superb setting with far reaching tranquil views. It was quiet (which was a change to the city life) and clean. A must with my other half.
We were met by George, who was the local cantact. He was extremely helpful. He showed us around and made sure we had everything we needed. The kids were already excited with the abundance of outside space to go and explore. Set at the top of a vllage called Christow on the Eastern part of Dartmoor, it was remote (you couldn't hear anything looking out at the far reaching views) but within a mile we were at the local shop that had everything we had forgotten and some lovely local produce.
We explored the area, and were very pleased with the lovely walks around it. There were some brochures in the holiday let, and as we never really plan these things we took and handful and went and did them. We went to the beach which took about an hour to get too. The kids loved it as we managed to sort that for one of the sunny days this summer. A skatepark and playparks were all within walking distance of the beach itself.
We also went to Pennywell, which we must admit we did not have high hopes for, but the abundance of hands on play with animals went down a treat with the kids again. Crealy park, on the outskirts of Exeter was great, and the kids wanted to spend most of the day there. Also an added bonus was a new skate park they had built in Christow. The kids love scootering and whenever we came back to the holiday let they woud plead to go down there for an hour.
We only ate twice in, and all the usual cooker, microwave facilities helped. We tried out some of the local pubs on a couple of the evenings, which were all great, but a couple of miles down the road, was a pub called The Manor at Ashton, and the food was superb. A real find, that was recommended by George.
We also visted Canonteign falls which is (supposedly) the highest waterfall in the UK. Sadly we went on one of the rainydays, but could see its attraction if the weather was good.
When the children winded down in the evening we would walk around the beautiful set area the Engine House was placed, and came across deer, birds of prey and plenty of rabbits.
If you are looking for somewhere as a get away fom the real hustle and bustle of the city, we couldn't recommend somewhere more lovely. The kids really enjoyed it, and we loved the peacefulness. We will be returning next year (fingers crossed).
