“Delightful stay in historival Vittoriosa”
Reviewed 16 March 2016 for a stay in March 2016

From the start, Alfie was a friendly, welcoming and attentive host. He met us at the airport, took us round the village , gave us tips about restaurants, the ferry to Valletta, treated us to a drink at the restaurant 'd Centre' where we ended up eating several times during our stay! We really enjoyed their 'Rabbit stew' in particular! His advice and reassurance, keeping in touch throughout our stay, was invaluable. On our arrival, there was a welcome pack of fruit, ham, milk , bread and other essentials. Alfie took us round the neighbourhood and showed us where to go for the ferry (only 10/15 mins across to Valletta and always on time, every half hour). We purchased a weekly ticket for the ferry and also a weekly ticket for the buses, on his advice! The best was the ferry, though!
It was great to stay in an authentic, 500 year-old house in the heart of Birgu. Whilst keeping its old, quaint character, the house was spotless and had all the amenities we needed! There was TV downstairs and upstairs, but no English channels, so we were pleased we had brought our lap-top as Wi-fi was excellent and we could receive English TV on it. Mobiles, on the other hand, don't work too well inside the houses. As a result, there is a noisy neighbour, always on her mobile in the mornings, but this didn't really bother us; it gave us a laugh more than anything!
The location was excellent! History abounds in this historical little town with its quaint streets; bustling activity in the mornings and peaceful at nights. Plenty of walks and information about places to visit.
It can get chilly in Winter, because of the stone walls and floors, so we were glad we'd brought extra clothing and slippers! We fed the metre for the heating and it soon warmed up!
Finally, Alfie took us back to the airport at 5.30 a.m.; so kind of him!
We had a wonderful experience and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Alfie's place to friends! We made many friends ourselves during the stay and can't wait to see them again!

Liked best: The friendliness of host and neighbours and the proximity to places of interest
Liked least: As it was Winter, we felt cold at times (especially in bathroom) and it was dark all day inside.

Thank you so much for such a wonderful and detailed write up. It’s always refreshing to read such reviews.

Knowing that visitors enjoyed their stay and had value is very satisfying and is certainly on Top of my agenda.

It was an absolute pleasure meeting you and all that goes from all the stuff at the restaurant. Thank you so much for leaving the place spotless and organizing all used linen in one spot, it really does help a lot especially when time is tight.

I certainly hope to get to meet you again in the future.

“A superb slice of authentic Malta on a stunning island”
Reviewed 26 February 2016 for a stay in January 2016

My partner and I had the most delightful stay at Alfie's Place at the end of January. Alfie is a wonderful and congenial host who picked us up from the airport and took us to the lovely old house in Birgu which was to be our cosy base for the week. What a characterful place! The house itself has all its original old features and is full of history, as well as very comfortable. We soon realised that the region of Birgu the house is set in is something of a gem too, full of charm and quirky old streets, with an old village square and a few good local bars and shops. It also enjoys fantastic access to the whole of this gorgeous island thanks to a very efficient and reasonable bus service throughout. It really couldn't have been better and we do hope to be back again before too long! I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get a taste of the real local Maltese life, a world away from the cement tourist blocks. Thanks again to Alfie and see you again!

“Perfect Place To Stay!”
Reviewed 25 February 2016 for a stay in February 2016

This place is a beautiful place to stay. The location is perfect, the accommodation is a great size, the bathroom looks brand new, the bedrooms are rather big too. I had a lovely stay here and Alfie, who runs the place, kept in constant contact with me to check that everything was alright and to see if I needed anything which I thought was amazing. He even picked me up and dropped me off at the airport! I will most certainly be booking with him again, I cannot praise him and his place enough, it's stunning. (And the neighbours there are really friendly too!)

A beautiful cosy Maltese house, located 5 minutes from the main square. Alfie made us feel so welcome from the moment we met at the airport. He took us on a little tour, even though it was late, and showed us the useful things like the bus terminal, ferry terminal, shops etc, then treated us to a drink in the bar, before taking us to the house. There were provisions in the fridge, milk, bread, butter, and a lovely bowl of fruit. The house has everything you need, and is only 10 minutes walk from the lovely marina and ferry to Valletta, where you can catch a bus to anywhere on the island.
We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and hope to be back soon.
Would highly recommend Alfies Place

“A great 3 week stay in Birgu...”

* Location - The Birgu area is fantastic! Interesting sites are everywhere, and the night views are superb. Take each of the 4 Birgu walks, they are like going on a historical treasure hunt - you will be amazed at what you find behind/above/below/inside the many walls and buildings that you pass by. Local convenience shops are nearby and a large Chains supermarket is about a 20min walk. The weekly street market is great for fresh fruit/veg.
* Authentic - Staying right in Birgu Old Town you can enjoy the sights and sounds of local Maltese life - the ringing of the church bells, classical music tunes, horns of the fruit/veg truck and the bakery van (do try the delicious bread pudding!), firework displays, neighbourly chats - yet the area is very peaceful and generally quiet. We slept very well!
* Friendly Host - Alfie is a cheerful and friendly host. He responded promptly to emails, sending us some useful info before arriving and providing us with more when we got there. We weren't sure how frequent the buses would run late in the evening so Alfie offered to pick us up at the airport. It was a great chance to get acquainted and get introduced to the area, especially as we were treated to beers at the local pub once in Birgu (thanks Alfie!).
* Accessibility - We bought bus passes which cover 12 journeys for up to 2 hours each. We also took the ferry over to Valletta a couple times. Buses 2,3,4 go frequently between Birgu and Valletta and from there it is easily accessible to all areas on other buses. We did all the 10 or so Heritage Walks as well as other hikes and were able to catch buses to/from all the starting/ending points.
* Good value - Well equipped for long term stay. Alfie provides a nice starter selection of fruit, coffee/tea, and other basic provisions to carry you over 'til the next day when you can get better oriented. He also drops off clean bedding/towels on a weekly basis. A landline phone is provided should you need to contact each other for any reason.
Tip: Bring slippers (stone floors in winter can get chilly) or even better, buy a nice pair at the weekly Tuesday market.
