We stayed here two nights and thought it was great. The rooms are good, basic but our room was very clean and comfortable and the AC worked well. The food was great as well. The hotel has quite a few groups staying so our second night was very busy and the staff were a bit all over the place but would definitely recommend. Its very near the elephant transit home, which is great, and the national park as well. The pool area was fine to have a rest before heading out for a game drive.

The safari is excellent, this hotel is ideal if you are staying for a few nights. The rooms are well appointed and very comfortable. The restaurant is buffet style which was okay, but just okay. The other issue is that you eat open to the elements, so flies are your company. The bar however is fully air conditioned and closed to the flies. It’s a good spot for safari, and watch out for the monkeys!!! They run in, out and all over the hotel.

We only spent a night here but sampled the food, safari, room and pool.

FOOD
The food here was very average. Both breakfast and dinner were buffets covered in flies and the food looked like it had been out for hours. For dinner we picked off the a la carte instead as not tempted by anything on the buffet but we had the most disappointing chicken satay sticks I’ve ever eaten. The satay was essentially watery peanut butter and very little of it and it came with dry white rice and no vegetables. YUM.

SAFARI
Safari here was very easy to organise, they are geared up for it and offer two times a day and will organise a driver to pick you up from the hotel. We were staying as a couple and although only $40 for a Jeep (+$25 each for entry to the park) for didn’t realise the Jeep sits 6. We would have liked to have tried to share with other guests but this wasn’t offered/got lost in translation. We saw elephants and birds and buffalo and monkeys but that was pretty much it. I loved seeing the elephants and have been on safari before but don’t come here if hoping to see the big five.

ROOM
The room was big and plush and had everything we needed, the bathroom was new and everything really clean. Our only criticism is the WiFi cut out the second we entered the room so no ‘words with friends’ before bed!

POOL
Pool area was nice and big and the pool attendants are attentive. There are lots of beds but not many always in the sunshine if you are looking to get a tan. Nice way to spend an afternoon after safari.

All in all this place was fine for a night as long as you are staying in order to do. Safari. The room was comfortable and the staff great and willing to help. I wouldn’t stay here more than a night however as the food is really awful (and overpriced!) and there are no other options to turn to. The road the hotel is on is a long dirt strip with a set of other hotels along it periodically but no other restaurants or shops. The pool wouldn’t keep you entertained for much longer than a day either I’m afraid.

My family and I really enjoyed our stay here. When we checked in, we were told our room wasn't ready yet even though we arrived after the allotted time. We just took it in stride but really wished we could have quickly settled in after a long drive. Soon cold towels were offered and delicious fresh juice drinks. Not long after that, another employee approached us and told us that since the room was not ready, he instead would upgrade us to a better room which was ready now and at no additional charge. That's customer service!
All the staff were super attentive all throughout the hotel and always greeted you with a kind smile. Hotel grounds were spacious and lush with unique water features and a wide variety of local fauna. Room was very big and clean with nice amenities throughout. The buffet dinner was wonderful with tons of selections to make everyone happy, and the staff was super attentive and efficient restocking food items and bussing tables so plates never piled up. Best thing was, since there wasn't a lot of dining options nearby, the Grand Udawalawe didn't gouge its' quests with high prices, in fact they were equally priced to far less superior restaurants we ate at when we were driving up to stay. The dining area was very big and clean and offered great views and ambience while dining. Pleasantly surprised and I would without hesitation-stay here again.

On arrival to this hotel,we had to wait for our room to be finished cleaning,we weren't offered a welcome drink until our guide asked for one.
We sat at the pool side while we waited, staff were very courteous and friendly.
Of all the hotels we stayed at as part of our tour this was probably the most basic room we were given, nice view onto the garden, but the room felt very "motel".
I have to say the bathroom was filthy with black and brown stained grout and limescale round the taps and shower fittings, and the extractor fan was covered in black mould.
We did complain, and we got an apology.
The laughable thing was all they did to compensate our inconvenience was pay our bar bill...not much over £5.00,my partner was not impressed.
The restaurant was ok,we sat by where a chef was cooking bbq sausage, never have I experienced such a miserable faced rude person, glaring at people and just "dumping " sausage on plates as if you were an annoyance! On the plus side, the spicy pork black curry was the best curry I had on this holiday, and I had curry morning noon and night wherever we stayed.
