“Hike with a rewarding swim under the waterfall”

Reviewed 28 June 2018

You need to have a permit to do the hike (R20 pp). You can obtain in it in the visitors center in Sabie. However, there was nobody to check the permit during the whole trek. It is a bit tricky to find the start of the trek (it starts behind the picnic spot, where you need to leave your car). The walk is very easy. It took us one hour one way. The waterfall is stunning (wider than higher) and if you don’t mind cold water you can swim in the lake just under the waterfall. Well worth the effort as it is different than all the other waterfalls in the neighborhood.

The hike to the waterfalls requires a permit and we found it easiest to purchase the hiking permit from the Tourist Information office in Sabie. The other advertised options proved to be difficult to locate. The hassle of getting the permit was however well worth the effort. This was our favourite waterfall and walk in the area and we probably took much longer than the average time to complete the walk. The experience of walking through a rain forest with the rippling river on your side for most of the walk is simply stunning. It is utterly quiet and you are surrounded by the feel and sounds of nature. We stopped many many times to admire the moss covered trees, scrutinise mushrooms and observe the birds and butterflies. The walk is an easy one in that I can probably be taken by all ages - it just gets a little wet in some areas. The walk also takes you through the pine forest. At the forest falls itself, you can take time to sit on the grass and rocks to admire the falls. We took our shoes and socks off and dipped our feet in the cool and clear water for a fair while before turning back. Whilst it was not difficult to find the start of the hike (in the picnic area), the route could use some additional signage, especially when one has to cross dirt roads to continue the hike. This is a walk not to be rushed. Take it all in. The falls at the end of the walk is a bonus, not the main attraction.

This is a nice circular route. We loved all the sounds of the birds, the views during the walk and of course the Forest Falls are impressive. The route however was a little hard to follow, some extra signs would not hurt.

Also note that a hiking permit is needed.

Parked up, paid our money, pointed in the general direction. Advertised as a a 2km walk. 1 hour later, still no falls. The signage is ridiculous. The staff obviously just don’t care.
Back to the car park, told staff of our feelings and then directed 99 degrees from the initial direction.
Once found, they are worth the visit. But.............
