“Visit the mosaic of cultures”
Reviewed 19 November 2011

The hotel is spread over three different buildings. Erdoba Konakları is the main hotel with just double rooms, located on the main street of the old town. The larger rooms and suites are in Selçuklu Konaklari, which is a separate mansion, close to the main hotel, but reachable only by a meandering steep and narrow street that is strictly pedestrian. There are no amenities in this part of the hotel, except for tea service; you will need to go back to the main building or elsewhere for meals. Both hotels are perched on the hilltop of Mardin and offer stunning views of the Mesopotamian valley with visibility for miles. The hotel is alcohol free...

Room Tip: If you are a party of more than 2, either stay at the Selcuklu Konakları, or take two separate rooms...

Stayed 2 nights while on a tour and found hotel acceptable. Called boutique hotel probably because of setting in antique building. Location is good in old town. Our rooms where in a different building about 20 m from main. Rooms ok. Well kept and clean. Restaurant was on a terrace, overlooking mesopotamian plain. Food was good , no buffet, service adequate. Breakfast was buffet but in a basement, which was noisy and uncomfortable. Would have been nicer on the terrace.

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel and in case it were not high season and in case we could have found a better hotel, we would not even stayed 1 night!!! Though the hotel's main building setting and location is lovely, its rooms, service level, personnel are all terrible!!! Let me start with the room: all the rooms are in different buildings, ours was in one of the oldest buildings. It was a quite old, concrete, ugly building. There were no windows in the room, 2 people we could hardly walk together at the same time. Once you open the shower, all the bathroom was inondating with water. Air conditioner was so noisy I could hardly sleep and if you turn it off, you got suffocated in that tiniest room. The personnel both at restaurants and reception were extremely rude. You talk about your problems and complaints and they don't even "literally" look into your face and you talk you talk and they say nothing and bring no solution. At breakfast wheh the hotel is full, there is a big queue and you have to wait around 15 minutes to be seated. Though the hotel has a lovely terrace, they serve the dinner and the breakfast only in the basement indoor restaurant which smells. I really do not recommend this hotel at all, especially with the prices they charge!!!

Judging form the brochure of the hotel, "Erdoba Evleri" is a luxury hotel with a wonderful atmosphere. However, the brochure lacks the following sentence "For the same price you can also stay in a tiny room with toilet and shower clumsily built into the room, and where there is only a tiny window so high up on the wall that it is impossible to see anything through it." Most of the people in our group were placed in claustrophobic rooms of this kind; one, however, was given a really luxurious royal room, but that did not help the others. The breakfast however, was excellent.

Booked in for 3 nights, checked out after 1 and probably should have not stayed for the 1st night either. To start with, a very unwelcoming hotel - they just seem to just "wallow" in the good travel guide rating they have somehow got without making any effort to be pleasant and just collect in all the tourist dollars.

The rooms in the building we stayed in were really not designed for the purpose - typically the shower & toilet was in a glass partitioned area in the middle of the bedroom. In ours, you had to walk through the wet shower area to use the other facilities. The electric sockets did not work, neither did the hair-drier. We asked for another room, but were told none were avaiable - even after booking about 3 months ago.

Overall, a 220 TL per night rip-off - by far the worst hotel we stayed in in Turkey and the most expensive too. Don't believe what the guide books tell you!
