“Restaurant Food”
Reviewed 20 June 2012

This hotel is 4* superior yet the quality of the food in the restaurants for the main dining is terrible. There are two restaurants one on the 5th floor which is casual and no tablecloths and one on the 4th which is slightly more formal. We were told that the food is the same in both restaurants, however this is not strictly true. On the 4th floor there is more room and the desserts and cheeses are very good, however the main meals are of very poor quality. Choice of potatoes is either chips or sliced boiled swimming in water and oil. Often the chips had run out. The meat and fish was of the cheapest quality and had no taste. One night the hake was just pre-formed fish in batter. The vegetables were soggy and over cooked and the soups were tepid.
The 5th floor restaurant was dark and had limited desserts and hardly any cheeses and a smaller breakfast selection.
The service in the hotel was excellent and the rooms quite good except there was need of a mirror behind the dressing table. The drawers in the dressing table and bedside tables are too shallow to be of any use.
There was no benefit staying in a spa hotel as the prices were no different from an independent spa and hardly any guests used it.

Room Tip: Higher floors are better

We have been going to this hotel twice a year for seven years and the experience just gets better. The satff are so helpful and friendly ( too many to name individually). The ethos of the hotel is for people to have the experiences that they choose - watersports, spa treatments, excellent food and wines.
Amazing hotel in a beautiful location.

We have just returned from a two week holiday at the Hotel Audax. We had never been to Menorca before and we were delighted to have selected this hotel as it was perfect for our needs. The fact that it was an 'adults only' hotel made it a very peaceful experience. The staff were so helpful and gracious and they all spoke good English. The food is superb - certainly the best buffets we have come across and the staff in the main dining room under Carma, the front of house, could not have looked after us any better. The hotel was spotless. My husband used the gym on a daily basis and said it very well equipped. The hotel is situated in a lovely bay, very near a gorgeous sandy beach. We cannot wait to go back again next year and we are just sorry that it has taken so long to find this perfect spot but at least we have got there in the end!

Room Tip: We were in room 422 which had a partial sea view from the side. It was cleaned to a high standard b...

This was our first visit to Menorca and we loved every minute of it.

The brochure promised great views from the Audax Hotel and we were not disappointed, our room looked out across the bay, blue skies, yachts and the lapping of the waves, brilliant. The hotel is situated next to the beach and close to restaurants and shops. The staff were lovely and helpful at all times, we were made to feel very welcome by Maria in the Oliva restaurant, therefore we chose to eat in this restaurant for all our meals. There is a choice of restaurant and times to dine. We enjoyed the lunch and coffee choices in La Colina, the poolside snack bar. The pool area is not the biggest and therefore the sunbeds are close together but there was no problem getting a sunbed, we tended to go out in the morning and come back around 2/3 pm and we always managed to get a sunbed. There did not seem to be an issue with people leaving towels on the beds either which is great. The evening entertainment is in the Blue Cafe most of it was fairly good, there were a lot of guests up dancing which made for a good atmosphere.

There was a coastal path across the road from the hotel, it was a lovely walk to the next bay, which took us about 45 mins as we stopped at the viewpoints, after a welcome ice cream at the cafe, it took us about 15 mins to walk back. There are a lot of steps down to the bay and I would recommend wearing trainers rather than flip flops as the path is uneven Take sun cream as there is not a lot of shade.

We hired a car for 3 days and got a good deal from Owner Cars just round the corner from the hotel. We visited, Mahon,Cuitadella, Es Mercadel , Monte Toro and Fornells.

Cala Galdana is a beautiful resort and the Audax Hotel is lovely, we would have no hesitation in recommending both for a restful holiday.

Room Tip: Well worth paying the little extra for a room with a sea view

My fiance and I stayed here for 11nights in late May flying with Thomson. It was hot, dry and sunny everyday bar one.

Room and hotel
We had room 547, pool facing. The room was perfect, noise and light polution minimal = good night sleeps most nights. Not much sunlight to the rooms/balacony during the day, but who's in the room during the day ayway?

I would say that you must be careful stepping out of the shower, put lots of the spare towels down because I nearly had an accident. Great having the fridge and the tea facilites.

Evening entertainment I felt was alright. We only went down 3 times and mostly went for walks or went to other bars in the evenings. Didnt spoil things.

Its great having a hotel without kids there!!! So restful. I would definely do it again.

Food
Food was amazing, most nights we used the 5th floor Olivia restaurant, the 4th floor needs lower lighting and was more 'canteen' like. I always tried something different, shame the menu repeated after only one week but there was so much choice anyway...There were special starter 'experiments' like cheese and kiwi things, or bacon and banana things, which were fun and mostly tasty (obviously remnents from breakfast but thats ok)! Try them all. We only had to wait for a table once and only for 10 mins. I think it was mainly a good service most days. For the health conscious there was lots of choice of salads, fruit and steamed veg (but I still gained 6lbs lol!!).

Big shame about being charged for bottled water when they have a free water machine covered up in the corner from breakfast, a shameless money making venture which angered me. We therefore only ever ordered one small bottle of water between us each dinner and were still faced with a 22 Euro bill at the end of the stay!! I have never experienced that before but then I am usually self catering B&B or all inclusive. It was distateful as its not like we hadn't paid enough for our food, understandably alcohol and soft drinks should carry a charge, but water?!

Small tip, we saved a fortune by filling up our old water bottles from the gym water fountain before going out each day anyway, its about 2euros a bottle and we both drink a lot!

Gym
Gym was great, 3 running machines, mostly empty and I went in each day to train (and steal water) there was no air con on when I used it though, it needs to be on by May I think, so I often just jogged outside around the resort which was very safe.

Beaches
We walked to the beaches of Marcella, Marcelleta and Torqueda (this last takes about 1hr.10mins fast walking) but be warned, each beach has car access (somehow, we couldn't find this on the maps?) so many locals use it. These beahces are therefore not the isolated ideals that reviews might suggest. In fact the beaches were pretty packed each time we went. They were nice beaches, but being spoiled, I prefer a beach were there isn't someone within 5 ft of me. But once I got over that fact I enjoyed them, bring an umbrella. Our favourite beach was Cala En Porter, just past Alaoir on the south coast. So good we went back twice, I never minded paying the 15 euros was sun beds as comfort was needed for the long sun bathing days. The local beach is fine, probably one of the best actually, but far too busy for me.

Never went to the hotel pool, but did note a lot of empty chairs.

Car hire
Highly recommended, bought the first week from home online for £100 picked it up from the airport, then paid 85euros for 4 days from the place around the corner. We went EVERYWHERE!Different beaches each time, Cuitedella was sublime, got lost in the old town behind the cathedral with its windy, narrow streets. Mahon was less enjoyable but still worth a visit to see the harbour and there is good musuem there which explains the back ground of Menorca. Lots of other places such as Furnell (a must) the monestary up the hill and Binebecar, we bought one of those time out guides and a map. Whole country is well sign posted and roads easy to navigate but the maps seem a bit off scale.

Overall good hotel, make sure you book!! Would have given it 5 stars if not for the water thing.
